INDIANAPOLIS – Butler sophomore Kirsty Legg (Middlesborough, England) has been named Horizon League Women’s Runner of the Week, while Milwaukee sophomore Samia Taylor (Madison, Wis.) has earned Horizon League Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honors, for the week beginning Jan. 17.
Competing at the Gladstein Invitational hosted by Indiana University, Legg broke the Butler indoor 3000 record of All-American Victoria Mitchell while placing third among 12 competitors. Crossing the line in 9:30.07, Legg became the new Butler record-holder by .60 of a second.
The time is the top in the Horizon League during the indoor season and shaved 10 seconds off her winning time from the EIU Early Bird, run in early December.
Taylor recorded her second straight field athlete of the week honor after breaking her Milwaukee record in the triple jump, leaping 40’10 1/4” to record the victory. With the top mark in the League this season, Taylor went on to record the second-best long jump in the Horizon League this indoor season, measuring 18’10 3/4” to finish runner-up in the meet.
With Taylor’s help, Milwaukee was able to edge by Marquette, 71-69, in the dual.
Butler will compete in the Indiana Relays on Jan. 28-29, in Bloomington, Ind., while Milwaukee will head to Madison, Wis., for the Wisconsin Elite Invitational over the same days.
