INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler University senior Paul Mongillo (men's soccer) and Cleveland State University sophomore Liz Fazio (volleyball) have been named the Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Sept. 26).

Mongillo helped the Bulldogs win two of three matches last week, including the team's Horizon League opener at Wright State University on Sunday (Sept. 24). He played a key role in BU's defensive effort which allowed only three goals in the three outings, including a 1-0 shutout versus Western Kentucky University last Monday (Sept. 18).

The starting defender carries a 3.944 grade-point average as a finance major. Mongillo is a member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll as well as the Butler Athletic Director's Honor Roll.

Fazio averaged 3.83 kills and 2.83 digs per game in a pair of road matches last week as the Vikings opened Horizon League play. She tallied 11 kills, 11 digs and three blocks for her third double-double of the year, leading CSU to a three-game sweep at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay last Friday (Sept. 22), and paced the Vikings with 12 kills and six digs in a loss to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Sunday (Sept. 23).

In the classroom, Fazio boasts a 3.96 GPA as a biology major, earning CSU's Athletic Academic Excellence Award in 2006. She landed on the Dean's List in each of her first two semesters at the school. The League's accolade is her second this year.

The Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards for this academic year as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
