INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler senior Ronald Nored, who has notably combined success on the basketball court with excellence in the classroom at Butler, has been named second team on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men’s Basketball Team. The honor squad is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Nored, an Early Childhood/Middle Childhood Education major, is the sixth Butler player to earn Academic All-America recognition and the fifth since 2007. Butler has had one or more players named to the Academic All-America Team in each of the past six seasons, including three-time Academic All-American and 2011 Academic All-American of the Year Matt Howard.
Nored is wrapping up a career that has seen him help lead Butler to three Horizon League regular season championships, two league tournament titles and three consecutive trips to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, including back-to-back appearances in the national title game. During his four seasons, Butler has compiled a 105-32 record.
The 6-0 guard from Homewood, Ala., currently stands third on Butler’s all-time assist chart with 460 career assists, and he second on Butler’s all-time list for steals with 199. He’s one of just two players in Butler basketball history to record 400 career points, 400 career rebounds and 400 career assists. He joins former Butler Academic All-Americans Chris Miskel (1995), A. J. Graves (2007 & 2008), Drew Streicher (2008), Gordon Hayward (2010) and Howard (2009, 2010 & 2011).
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a 4.00 scale, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Nored was one of 15 Division I men’s basketball players named to this year’s Academic All-America squad. Tyler Zeller of North Carolina was chosen Academic All-American of the Year, and he was joined on the first team by Aaron Craft of Ohio State, Matthew Dellavedova of St. Mary’s (Calif.), Mason Plumlee of Duke and Brad Loesing of Wofford.
The second team included Nored, Drew Crawford of Northwestern, Brian Conklin of Saint Louis, Logan Aronhalt of Albany and Scott Saunders of Belmont. Chosen third team Academic All-America were JP Kuhlman of Davidson, Zack Novak of Michigan, Brian Stafford of Denver, Matthew Sullivan of Brown and Chris Wroblewski of Cornell.
