The sun set on 2005-06 athletic competition for the Horizon League Friday night, as Butler University distance runner Scott Overall finished 11th in the men's 5000m run at the 2006 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.

 

The 2006 Horizon League champion crossed the line in 14:27.32, a little less than 16 seconds behind the pace of winner and University of Wisconsin junior Chris Solinsky (14:11.71).

 

Arkansas senior Josphat Boit finished in second with a time of 14:13.81, followed closely by Iona senior Richard Kiplagat at 14:13.84.  Arizona's Obed Mutanya (14:17.41) came in fourth, while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi sophomore Shadrack Songok (14:20.18) finished fifth.  Daniel Huling of Miami-Ohio, Robert Cheseret of Arizona and Tonny Okello of South Alabama finished in spots 6-8, earning them All-America honors.

 

Overall recorded the seventh-fastest time in the preliminaries on Wednesday, June 7, to earn his spot in the finals.  He qualified for the national meet after posting a school-record 13:38.19 at the Stanford Cardinal Qualifier in late April.

 

The Butler senior was the only Horizon League athlete to compete in three NCAA championship events this year, earning an at-large berth with his Butler teammates to the 2005 NCAA Cross Country national meet and individually qualifying for events at both the Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field national meets.

 

During the 2005-2006 academic year, Overall's achievements include:
·          Finished 5th at Horizon League Cross Country Championships
·          Member of 2005 Horizon League Cross Country Champion Butler Bulldogs
·          Finished 49th at NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships
·          Won the Horizon League title and set a meet record in the men's 1,000 meter run (2:24.79)
      at the 2006 Indoor Track & Field Championships
·          Anchored the winning men's distance medley relay at the 2006 Horizon League Indoor Track & 
      Field Championships
·          Named Outstanding Running Performer of the Meet at the 2006 Horizon League Indoor Track & 
      Field Championships
·          Finished 12th in the men's 3,000m at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships
      (8:16.56)
·          Named 2006 Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year
·          Won Horizon League title and meet record in the 5,000m run at the 2006 Outdoor Track & Field
       Championships (14:30.57)


·          Finished 11th in the men's 5000m run at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
