Butler's Streicher, Milwaukee's Hall Named U.S. Army Scholar-Athletes of the Week

Butler University graduate student Drew Streicher (men's basketball) and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee junior Ashley Hall (women's diving) have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Dec. 4).

Streicher played 31 minutes in 13th-ranked Butler's 65-46 victory over Ohio State, and matched his career-high with three steals against the Buckeyes. He scored five points, grabbed two rebounds, and added two assists in the victory, while also limiting Ohio State's center to just six points in the second half.

Streicher boasts a 3.949 grade-point average as he works toward a Master's degree in Business Administration. He was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA District V All-Academic First Team in 2006-07, while also earning First Team Academic All-League honors. Streicher was also recognized on the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll, and has been accepted to Indiana Medical School for the 2008-2009 school year.

Hall competed against 15 other teams at the Miami (OH) Invitational where she earned first-place on the three-meter board with a season-high score of 296.05. She also nabbed third-place on the one-meter board with 269.90, another season-best score. Both performances were NCAA Zone-qualifying totals.

Academically, Hall carries a perfect 4.0 grade-point average as a business major. She has been named to the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll, as well as the Dean's List at Milwaukee.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.

OTHER MALE NOMINEES:

Tom Levin, Loyola (basketball, senior, 3.67, finance) recorded two points, two rebounds and an assist in a 64-47 loss to Bradley on Wednesday (Nov. 28). He also played nine minutes off the bench in Loyola's 61-50 setback at Northern Iowa on Saturday (Dec. 1).

Robby Leibold, Milwaukee (swimming, junior, 3.845, health sciences) had a record-setting meet as he won two events to help Milwaukee to the team title at the Wheaton Invitational last weekend. In the 1,650-yard freestyle, Leibold broke the oldest school record on the books, while also setting the meet and pool standard. He won the 500-yard freestyle, setting a pool and meet mark, while also earning third-place in the 200-yard butterfly. He now has 11 wins and four second-place finishes in 17 races this season.

Shawn Huff, Valparaiso (basketball, senior, 3.21, sociology/criminology) led all players in scoring in both of Valpo's games last week, registering 19 points against Western Michigan on Wednesday, and 17 points against Ball State on Saturday, as the Crusaders went 2-0 on the week. He hit six-of-seven shots from the field against WMU, and tied a career high with five three-pointers against Ball State. On the season, Huff leads Valpo in scoring (12.4 points per game) and is second in rebounding (5.6 rebounds per game).

OTHER FEMALE NOMINEES:

Elyse VanBogaert, Loyola (basketball, sophomore, 3.76, undecided) posted 10 points and five rebounds in Loyola's 82-51 loss at Illinois State on Friday (Nov. 29), and then tallied six points, three rebounds, and four blocks in a 70-52 loss at Eastern Illinois on Saturday (Dec. 1). She averaged 8.0 points per game and 4.0 rebounds per game for the Ramblers last week.

Agnieszka Kulaga, Valparaiso (basketball, junior, 3.75, international business) led Valpo with 18 points in the Crusaders' victory over instate rival Ball State on Saturday. She added four rebounds, three assists, and two steals and was six-for-six from the free throw line. Kulaga played all 40 minutes for the first time in her career, and has now made 16-straight free throws after missing her first attempt of the season.
