INDIANAPOLIS – Butler junior Andrew Wegeng has been named Horizon League Men’s Golfer of the Week, while Detroit freshman Olivia Richards has been named Horizon League Women’s Golfer of the Week in the first weekly golf awards of the spring season.

Wegeng won medalist honors in last week’s Bulldog Florida Invitational posting a five-under-par score of 139. He grabbed the lead with an opening round three-under-par score of 69 and closed the event with a final round score of 70. He was five strokes ahead of the second place competitor.

The two-day total posted by Wegeng broke the previous Butler 36-hole tournament record of 143, set by Jonathan Novak at the Lipscomb Fall Classic in 2002.

In his first tournament of the spring, Wegeng placed sixth out of 72 individuals in the Don Benbow Invitational.

Wegeng and his Bulldog teammates return to action next week when they host the Butler Spring Invitational at Prestwick Country Club in Avon, Ind., from March 26-27.

Richards won the Women’s Golfer of the Week award after record two top-10 finishes, including medalist honors in her first spring tournament, in three events this spring. Richards started her spring season by winning the Titan Quad Challenge with a one round score of four-over-par 76. The Titans also won the four-team event. She tied for 13th place with a two-round score of 158 in the Sunshine Spring Classic as the Titans team tied for third out of 10 teams. At Butler’s Benbow Invitational, Richards carded a two-round score of 155 to place in a tie for sixth as the Titans as a team finished in fourth.

Detroit’s next tournament is the IPFW Spring Classic from April 2-3.
