Butler's Woldmoe, Detroit's Cornwell Earn Tennis Athlete of the Week Honors
INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler freshman Austin Woldmoe (Fishers, Ind.) has been named Horizon League Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, while Detroit senior Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, Mich.) has earned Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors, for the week of March 19-25. The accolade is the first of the year for both players.
In Butler’s (3-13, 2-0 Horizon) conference-opening weekend, Woldmoe led the Bulldogs to a 2-0 record with wins at Valparaiso and at UIC. Cornwell helped Detroit (4-8, 1-1 Horizon) to a 2-1 week as the Titans split their first two Horizon League matches.
Beginning League play at Valparaiso, Woldmoe opened play for Butler with a straight-set, 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, teaming with Billy Weldon for an 8-5 triumph at No. 1 doubles in the 5-2 victory. The following evening, the freshman collected his second win of the weekend at No. 1, cruising at 6-4, 6-1.
Finding her stride, Cornwell did not drop a set in three singles wins, first getting past her opponent at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-4, in Detroit’s 5-4 victory at Wayne State. Cornwell began the weekend with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 in a narrow 4-3 loss to Cleveland State but helped the Titans collect a 6-1 triumph over Youngstown State with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 4. In doubles play, Cornwell and Elena Strakhova teamed to go 3-0.
Butler will step out of conference play to take on Ball State on Thursday, March 29, before returning to Horizon League action on Saturday, March 31, hosting Detroit. The Bulldogs will also face IUPUI on Saturday in a non-conference match.
Detroit will travel to Indianapolis for a women’s match on Saturday, meeting Butler at 2 p.m. ET. The Titans will continue their road trip on April 1, taking on Wright State at 10 a.m. ET.
