INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler University distance runner Kent Wories and Valparaiso University softball player Karen Korb have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 19, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Thursday (April 23).

Wories (Edwardsville, Ill./Metro East Lutheran), a senior, set a meet and track record in winning the 1,500 meters last weekend at the Rose-Hulman Invitational. His time of 3:55.56 also was a personal best.

In the classroom, Wories carries a 3.956 grade-point average as a finance major at Butler. He was voted to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team in 2008 and has been named to the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll every semester.

Korb (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran), a senior outfielder, hit .417 to lead Valparaiso to a 2-2 record last week. She tripled and scored the game-tying run in an eventual 3-2 victory Thursday over Purdue University. In Saturday's opener against the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Korb went 2-for-4 -- including her second career home run -- with two runs-batted-in, and she came back with a 2-for-3 effort in the nightcap as the Crusaders split the doubleheader.

A finance and marketing major, Korb owns a 3.94 grade-point average at Valparaiso and was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District V First Team as a junior after being a second-team pick as a sophomore. She also has earned Valpo Presidential academic honors and been named to the Dean's List each of her semesters at the school. In addition, Korb is one of 30 national candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and is the reigning U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Month for March.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
