INDIANAPOLIS - Wright State senior Quentin Cate and Milwaukee junior Chad Pierce have been named Horizon League Baseball Players of the Week for the period of March 15-21. Cate registers his third career weekly honor from the League office, while Pierce records his first.
Cate picks up Batter of the Week accolades after going 9-for-17 (.529) with three doubles, one triple, one homer, three runs and eight RBI in four games last week. He also registered a 1.000 slugging percentage and .556 on-base percentage for the Raiders.
The infielder, a native of Cambria, Calif., went 7-for-9 in a pair of non-conference games on Friday. He turned in a 3-for-5 effort with three RBI in an 8-2 win over Missouri State, then hit for the cycle with two runs and three more RBI in an 8-7 setback to Big 12 Conference power Oklahoma State.
Pierce notches Pitcher of the Week honors after allowing just three hits over eight scoreless innings on Friday at #25 Kansas State. He carried a shutout into the eighth against the Wildcats, but settled for a no-decision as the Panthers suffered a 2-1 walk-off defeat.
The right-hander, a native of Fond du Lac, Wis., allowed just one unearned run against the Big 12 foe, which came in averaging over eight runs and 10 base knocks per contest.
Milwaukee (4-10) and Wright State (6-9) continue their non-conference slates on Wednesday. The Panthers visit Northern Illinois at 4:05 p.m. ET, while the Raiders travel to Vanderbilt at 7 p.m.
Cate and Pierce will become eligible for the Horizon League Network's "People's Choice" award, which is announced each Thursday afternoon. Log on to www.HorizonLeagueNetwork.tv to vote.
