Cleveland State and Detroit Victorious on Wednesday Night

Cleveland State 68, VCU 57
With four players scoring in double-figures, Cleveland State women's basketball team was able to post a 68-57 victory over VCU Wednesday evening.

Haley Schmitt, who tallied a career-high 12 points against the Rams, was 2-for-2 from behind the arc along with five rebounds, an assist and a steal. Shalonda Winton had a team-high 17 points along with 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season, while Kiersten Green tallied her fourth straight double-digit contest with 12 points. Cori Coleman was the final Viking to notch double-figures, adding 13 points, three rebounds and three assists. Freshman Jasmine Flanagan also set a career-best, posting five points including her third three-pointer of the season.

The Rams controlled play during the opening minutes of the second half, gaining a 10-point advantage, their largest of the game at the 30-20 mark with 18:24 left to play. Cleveland State responded with a 10-0 run over the next 1:13, tying the contest at 30-30 on a Coleman three-pointer. The Vikings were then able to gain just their second lead of the contest at the 14:38 mark on another Coleman three-pointer.

The two teams traded baskets over the next six minutes, until the Vikings were able to regain the lead for good at the 6:24 mark on a Winton jumper (48-47). Over the next 2:50 CSU went on a 14-3 run, including a pair of three-pointers from Schmitt and one from Coleman to gain their largest lead of the contest (12 points) at the 62-50 mark with 3:17 left on the clock.

Detroit 97, Western Michigan 57
Led by sophomore Shareta Brown's career-high 35, and a season-high 18 from senior Demeisha Fambro, the Detroit women's basketball team completely dominated in-state rival Western Michigan, 97-57, on Wednesday night at Calihan Hall.

The 35-point explosion was the fourth career 30-point game for Brown, and she also added 11 rebounds for her 14th career double-double. Brown – who came into the game 11th in the nation in scoring at 22.2 ppg. - was 12-of-18 from the field and 11-of-14 from the free throw line with three assists, two blocks, and two steals.

It was a complete effort on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court for the Titans right from the start as UDM raced out to a double-digit lead with a 23-2 run over a nine-minute span in the first.The Titans would actually increase their lead to 23 in the first half and led 41-18 at the break. In that first half, UDM shot 56.7% from the field (17-of-30), while the Titan “D” forced 15 turnovers and saw WMU shoot just 26.7% (8-of-30).

The red, white and blue showed no mercy in the second half as they reeled off a 19-8 run to take a 60-26 lead. Detroit would never see its advantage fall under 23 and gradually pushed it into the 30's before settling for the 40-point win.

#22/23 Dayton 95, Wright State 73
The Wright State women's basketball team cut a 26-point halftime deficit to just 10 with 7:56 remaining, only to see Dayton pull away down the stretch as the #23/22 ranked Flyers won 95-73 Wednesday at WSU's Nutter Center.

Dayton jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead and gradually extended the lead to as much as 28 before taking a 53-27 halftime advantage.  The Flyers shot 42 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including nine of 18 from three-point range, while the Raiders hit for just 23 percent and were one of 11 from behind the arc.

The WSU offense, however, picked up in the second half as the Raiders scored 17 of the period's first 23 points and later drew to within 10 at 72-62 on a KC Elkins jumper with 7:56 to play.

Four Raiders scored in double figures, led by Ivory James with a season-best 22 points.  Kim Demmings added 14 before fouling out with 14 minutes remaining in the game while Elkins had 11 and Kayla Lamotte 10 off the bench.  Breanna Stucke nearly had a double-double with nine points and as many rebounds while Brianna Innocent also collected nine boards.
