With four players scoring in double-figures for the second time this season, the Cleveland State women's basketball team was able to earn a 67-55 victory over Ole Miss Tuesday evening. Tuesday's victory marked CSU's first-ever win over an SEC team, while it also extended the Vikings' win streak to five straight games.
Cori Coleman led the Vikings with 20 points against Ole Miss, including a career-high tying four three-pointers. Shalonda Winton was just shy of a double-double, notching 17 points and nine rebounds, while Imani Gordon added 12 points and eight boards. Kiersten Green tallied 10 points, two assists and two steals, and Honesty King chipped in eight points and six rebounds
Cleveland State got out to a strong start, opening the contest on a 15-0 run that included four points from Gordon and four points Winton. Ole Miss was finally able to get on the board six minutes into the game, and posted a 12-2 run over the next 4:49 to bring the contest within five points at 17-12. Five straight points from Winton extended CSU's lead back to double-digits though, putting the score at 22-12 with 6:49 left in the first half. The two teams traded baskets to close out the frame, with the Vikings going into the break with an 11-point advantage at 30-19.
During the second half the Vikings were able to hold a double-digit lead for the majority of the frame. The Rebels were able to cut the lead to eight-points (41-33), but King responded with back-to-back three-pointers on CSU's next two possessions to give the Vikings a 47-33 lead.
Over the next 4:33 CSU extended its lead to 17-points, the largest lead of the contest, at the 57-40 mark and controlled play for the remainder of the frame. With 7:17 left on the clock, Ole Miss went on a 7-0 run, but a pair of three-pointers from Coleman and two free throws from Winton once again gave the Vikings a 16-point lead (65-49) with 3:43 left to play. CSU was able to hold strong throughout the remainder of the contest, earning the 67-55 victory.
For the fourth straight game CSU shot at least 40-percent from the floor, notching a .438 clip (21-for-48) against the Rebels. The Vikings recorded a season-high five blocks on the game, including three from Winton. The CSU defense held Ole Miss to 27-percent from the field, along with a 26-percent mark from three-point.
Detroit 88, IPFW 58
The Detroit women's basketball team had everything working today – including an inside and outside game - as the Titans used a huge first-half run to upend the IPFW Mastodons, 88-58, on Tuesday morning at the Gates Sports Center.
Sophomore Shareta Brown led all scorers with 34 points – her sixth career 30 point game and fourth this season - while adding nine rebounds. The nation's leading scorer coming into the game at 25.1 ppg., was 9-of-15 from the field and 15-of-20 at the free throw line.
Senior Demeisha Fambro tied her career high with four 3-pointers en route to 15 points, while senior Yar Shayok posted her 24th career double-double with a season-high 14 points and 13 rebounds.
The Titan offense was unstoppable again finishing the game shooting 60.0% from the field (30-of-50) with a season-high nine 3-pointers.
The Titans revved it up on offense and defense, ending the first stanza on a 32-8 run to take a 43-28 lead into the break .
The defense also held IPFW to 1-of-9 shooting in the last 5:50 of the half and just 36.0% in the period as the Mastodons were 9-of-25 from the field, but 6-of-9 from behind the arc.
The second half was all Detroit as the Titans never let their lead fall below 15, and with back-to-back buckets by Shayok and Brown followed by a free throw from Brown, UDM opened a 20-point advantage at 50-30.
The final spurt that completely put the game away came with Detroit up by 17, 52-35. A 13-1 run ensued, which featured three's from Fambro, sophomore Audrey Matteson and freshman Rosanna Reynolds, which propelled the Titans to a 29-point lead, 65-36, with 12:21 left.
Reynolds ended with seven points and a team-best four assists, while McCalister scored a season-high seven points and came away with four steals – the most steals by a Titan this season.
Green Bay 72, North Dakota State 37
Returning home for the first time since a 64-52 win against Indianapolis on Nov. 30, the Green Bay women’s basketball team (7-2) saw its offense come alive in a 72-37 win over North Dakota State (3-8). The Phoenix used 26 assists on 28 field goals to post its largest margin of victory of the 2012-13 season while improving to 3-0 at home.
Shooting a season-high 56 percent from the floor, the Phoenix used a season-high 26 assists to score the most points its scored in a game since a 79-48 victory over Richmond on Nov. 24. Green Bay dominated in the paint, outscoring the Bison 46-16 down low, led by seniors Sarah Eichler and Stephanie Sension, as well as redshirt junior Breannah Ranger. Eichler led all scorers 20 points with six rebounds and five assists.
Green Bay opened the game on a 17-0 run, holding North Dakota State scoreless until the 10:03 mark. The Phoenix led by as many as 25 before entering the half with a 42-18 lead. Senior Adrian Ritchie seven of her eight assists on the night in the opening frame. The recent 1,000-point club member, who was recognized for accomplishing this feat before the game, tied a career high with eight assists in the contest.
Leading by as many as 40 in the second half, Borseth was able to give his six bench players a combined 127 minutes on the court. Ranger led all bench players with 12 points in 13 minutes on a perfect 6-6 from the field.
Bradley 66, UIC 52
The UIC women’s basketball team suffered a non-conference road loss against Bradley, 66-52, Tuesday night at the Renaissance Coliseum. Redshirt junior Katie Hannemann tied a career-high 17 points and picked up her second double-double of the season with 10 rebounds.
The Flames trailed by eight points at halftime and stayed within striking distance through the early portion of second period. Bradley then forced a 7-1 offensive run, extending its lead to 14 points with 12:25 left to play, and never let the lead slip below 11 for the rest of the game.
Both squads committed 22 turnovers and shot a dismal 34 percent from the field. The Flames went 2-of-19 (10.5%) from three-point range and hit just 8-of-20 from the free throw line.
Bradley used a smothering defense to force five UIC turnovers in the early minutes and held a 15-4 lead by the 15:42 mark. The Flames pulled to within seven points on three different occasions over the next five minutes, feeding Hannemann down low and establishing a post presence. Twelve of the Flames’ first 14 points came in the paint, but they had also given up 10 fast break points in the first 12 minutes.
Bradley amassed a 30-17 lead with 3:50 remaining in the first half as the Flames suffered nearly a five minute scoring draught. UIC kept battling and cut the Braves’ advantage down to 32-24 by halftime, scoring six of the final eight points of the first stanza.
Hannemann paced all scorers at the break with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while Bradley had three players with six points apiece.
Both teams struggled from the field in the first period with the Flames going 0-for-7 from behind the arc as Bradley hit just 37.1 percent of its shots. The Flames did force 12 BU turnovers in the first 20 minutes, producing 14 points of those miscues.
Poor shooting and turnovers continued for both teams to start the second half, but Bradley slowly grew its lead out to 45-31 by the 12:45 mark.
With 6:28 left to play, BU’s Katie Yohn drilled a three from the left baseline that sparked a 7-0 Braves’ spurt, giving Bradley a comfortable 56-38 edge. The Flames seemed to have regained the momentum with two buckets in the next 17 seconds, cutting the deficit down to 14.
The Braves quickly extinguished the Flames rally, scoring eight of the next nine points, and reached its first 20-point lead with 3:29 remaining.
DePaul 87, Loyola 69
DePaul outscored Loyola 55-36 in the second half as the Blue Demons were able to break away from the Ramblers for an 87-69 win Tuesday night in Gentile Arena.
The Ramblers’ took the lead, 47-46, on two Taylor Johnson free throws with 13:48 remaining in the game, but DePaul would score the next six points and never trail again in the game.
Loyola was down only three, 54-51, at the under-12 minute media timeout, but the Blue Demons would outscore Loyola 17-4 before the next media timeout to break open the game.
Johnson led Loyola with 16 points and also had a team-high eight rebounds and a game-high six assists. Monica Albano had 14 points for the Ramblers and Patrice King chipped in 13 points.
DePaul shot 45.1 percent from the field, compared to 35.5 for Loyola and the Blue Demons outrebounded the Ramblers by 20, 51-31. Katherine Harry pulled down 22 rebounds for DePaul, while Anna Martin led the Blue Demons’ offensive output with 28 points on 12-of-16 shooting from the field.
