INDIANAPOLIS – Horizon League men’s tennis champion Cleveland State will travel to Ohio State for a first round match in the NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament. On the women’s side, 17-time conference champion UIC will meet Northwestern, it was announced on Tuesday night.
Cleveland State will face the Buckeyes on Friday, May 10. This is CSU's fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament in the past six seasons, earning the Horizon League's automatic bid after clinching the 2013 Horizon League Tournament title.
The Vikings enter the tournament with a 12-11 record and have won six straight matches heading into their first round contest. The Buckeyes received the No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament, owning a 31-2 record and earning their spot in the tournament field after claiming the Big Ten Tournament title.
Cleveland State has faced the Buckeyes once before in NCAA Tournament action, falling to Ohio State in the first round of the 2008 tournament. The two teams also met earlier this season, with OSU claiming a 4-0 victory.
First and second round competition will take place May 10-12 and features four teams playing in a single-elimination format. The winner of each site advances to the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex/Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, Ill. where the 16 teams will compete for the national championship May 17-21.
UIC and No. 15 Northwestern will be meeting for the sixth time in the women’s tournament.
In its 15-consecutive NCAA appearances, UIC has squared off with the Wildcats one-third of those times. The Flames last faced the Wildcats during the 2008 first round, when Northwestern defeated UIC, 4-0.
The Flames are still searching for their first win in the NCAA Tournament, after falling last season to Michigan, 4-0. The winner of the match between UIC and No. 11 seed Northwestern will advance to the second round and take on the winner of San Diego State versus Baylor.
The first and second rounds are set for May 10-13 and will be held at the Christie Tennis Center, located at 2310 Sheridan Road, in Evanston, Ill. The Flames and Wildcats go head-to-head on Friday, May 10, beginning at 2 p.m. (CT).
