Final Round Women’s Results
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla.—Cleveland State men and Detroit women were the last team’s standing at the 2014 Horizon League Golf Championship held at Mission Inn Golf Resort.
Oakland started the round with an eight-shot lead over last year's champion, Detroit, and had the lead heading to the back-nine before Detroit came storming back. The Titans were led by Lindsey Lammers, who earned her second career medalist honors. Lammers shot 76-77-75-228 for the two-shot win. Her first victory came in 2012 (79-78-81-238).
Joining Lammers on the All-Tournament team was Aislynn Merling of Youngstown State, who finished runner-up at 230 (74-82-74).
Christina Thorne (Detroit), Danielle Crilley (Oakland), Donna Fiscelli (Oakland), Allyson Hackman (Cleveland State) and Michelle Kleckner (Valparaiso) were also a part of the seven member team.
In their debut, Oakland finished in second-place (950). Youngstown State finished third (955), Valparaiso was fourth (957), Cleveland State was fifth (960), UIC sixth (985) and Green Bay finished seventh (989).
It's the Titans third championship in school history.
On the men’s side, Cleveland State registered its first championship since 2011, and its sixth championship in school history.
Three-time Horizon League Player of the Year Andrew Bailey paced the Vikings with a three-day total 218 (72-70-76) to nab medalist honors. Bailey capped his tremendous career with a Horizon League individual championship. He tied for the medalist honors in 2011 (71-77-76-224). Michael Balcar joined Bailey in the top-five, placing in a tie for fifth with a 54-hole total 224 (71-73-80).
The Vikings held a slim, six-shot lead over the Titans entering the final round. After going back and forth much of the back-nine, Detroit cut into the Vikings lead after Wil Wittmann turned in a 74.
However, Brendan Byrne of Cleveland State birdied the 18th hole to post a 73, and Bailey’s 76 was good for a three-shot victory.
Brendan Leonard of Detroit shot a two-under par 70, the best final round score, to finish in second-place, two shots off the pace.
The Titans finished as runner-up with a 54-hole total 895. Youngstown State finished third (911), Valparaiso finished fourth (915), Wright State placed fifth (940), Green Bay sixth (945) and Oakland rounded out the field seventh (969).
Detroit shot a final round 296, which ranked as the best team score in the final round.
Joining Bailey and Leonard on the All-Tournament team were Spencer Lendzion (Detroit), Evan Bowser (Oakland), Michael Balcar (Cleveland State), Bryan Yeo (Youngstown State), Brendan Byrne (Cleveland State), and Brandon Pluchinsky (Youngstown State).
