Cleveland State Sweeps #HLGOLF Championships

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA.- Cleveland State swept the Horizon League Golf Championships with the men shooting a 887 over the three days and the women totaling a 928 to win in dramatic fashion. Youngstown State’s Katlyn Shutt scored a 217 including a final round 73 to earn medalist honors. Cleveland State’s Anton Krecic won the individual title in a playoff over Wright State’s Ryan Wenzler.

Cleveland State’s men were led by the impressive play of Anton Krecic. The sophomore was seven-under par through fifteen holes before finishing with a 69 to enter the playoff. Krecic birdied both holes in the playoff to win. Patrick Luth finished second on the team both individually and for the tournament with a final round 72, scoring 221 over the three days. Joey Krecic finished with a score of 225 and Blake Prince capped off his week with a 74 for an overall score of 226. Cleveland State shot 291 as a team on the day tying the best team score on the day with Wright State. This is fourth team title in a row for Steve Weir and the Vikings.

The Viking women rallied down the stretch of the tournament to overtake Northern Kentucky and Youngstown State for the team title. Kaylee Neumeister’s 15-foot putt for eagle on the 18 hole created the separation that Cleveland State needed to win by three strokes over Youngstown State. As a team Cleveland State totaled a 307 on the day and a 928 on the week. Rayna Oosterhius shot a final round 75 and finished with a 223 to finish best on the team. Kaylee Neumeister finished with a 231, Ellie Cronin recorded a 236 and Emily Turski totaled a 243.

Youngstown State’s Katlyn Shutt recorded a 73 on the final round with four birdies on the card to earn medalist honors. Shutt’s overall score of one-over par, 217 for the week was six strokes better than the rest of the field.

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA.- Cleveland State men and women are at the top of the leaderboard after 36 holes of play. The Wright State’s Ryan Wenzler fired a 69 to sit in the lead at the clubhouse with a two-under 142. On the women’s side, Youngstown State’s Katlyn Shutt shot the best score on the day with a 71 to top the individual leaderboard heading into the final round.

Cleveland State’s women recorded a 302 on a day to turn a 15 stroke deficit into a one stroke advantage heading into the final round with a score of 621. Rayna Oosterhuis matched her first round score by shooting a team-best 74. Emily Turski bounced back with a 75, Ellie Cronin carded a 76 and Kaylee Neumeister signed for a 77. The Vikings have a big advantage in par-four scoring over the field shooting seven strokes better than anyone else.

Northern Kentucky is one stroke back with a 622 as Allison Leigeb tallied a 77 and Macy Wright scored a 76. Both players are top-ten individually keeping the Norse in the hunt for the title. Northern Kentucky leads the field with 19 birdies over the first two days and is the only team to record an eagle (Shelby Power, round one).

Youngstown State and Oakland are very much in contention with the Penguins down by four strokes with a 625 and the Golden Grizzlies with a 628 trail by seven strokes heading into the last day.

Youngstown State’s Katlyn Shutt’s score of 144 is four strokes better than anyone else. The freshman’s 71 in the second round included five birdies and four bogeys. Shutt’s eight birdies over the two rounds is two better than anyone else.

For the men, Cleveland State followed up with a 302 to finish with a 596 after 36 holes. The Vikings, like the first round, had every player shoot under 80 with Joey Krecic shooting a team-best 73 in the second round. His brother Anton leads the squad with a 146 after firing a 75 in the second round.

The best team score of the day belongs to Oakland with a 297 to place the Golden Grizzlies only two shots back of the lead with a 598. Oakland had three players shoot a 74 along with a 75 to help close the gap. Marc Norton’s 147 is tops on the team which will place him in the final pairing for tomorrow’s round.

Valparaiso and Detroit Mercy are within striking of the lead with the Crusaders finishing day two with a 605 and the Titans totaling a 609.

Ryan Wenzler’s 69 is the best 18-hole round in the tournament so far. The reigning medalist tallied seven birdies on the round to sit four ahead going into the final day.

The first groups will tee off at 7:30am EST tomorrow morning to determine who will take the tournament title. Follow the live stats below for tomorrow’s final round to determine who will win the two titles and receive a birth into the NCAAs.

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA.- The Northern Kentucky women jumped out to the early lead after firing an opening round team score of 304. The Norse were led by the strong play of Allison Leigeb who shot an even-par 72; the best round on the course. Leigeb came out firing at the flagstick with four birdies on the first seven holes. The senior finished with another birdie on the back nine to help Northern Kentucky hold an eight stroke advantage heading into the second day.

The defending women's champion Oakland shot an opening day score of 312 and will look to close the gap over the next two days. The Golden Grizzlies had three players shoot in the 70s with Fiona Schmidt shooting a team-best 75. The junior feasted on the par 5s going three-under on the day to lead the field in the category.

Youngstown State were paced by the play of the Shutt sisters with Katlyn shooting a 73 and Courtney recording a 78 on the round. Katlyn's round was the second best on the day as she tallied three birdies on her card. The Penguins are in third place with a 319 heading into the second round.

On the men's side, Cleveland State had consistent play from top to bottom to open with a 294. No player on the team shot worse than 76 with Anton Krecic leading the way with a 71. Krecic never looked back after making an eagle on the first hole to finish second in the individual standings after 18 holes. As a team, the Vikings took advantage of the par 5s going five-under on the day to hold a three-shot lead heading into tomorrow.

Co-Player of the Year award winner Peter Webb carded a 73 as Valparaiso opened with a 297 to finish three strokes off the lead. Valparaiso's top four players finished with 75 or better as the Crusaders look to upend the defending champions.

Overall there are five schools within ten strokes of the lead as Oakland shot a 301, Detroit Mercy finished with a 302, and Wright State totaled a 303. Detroit Mercy's Kyle Gaines finished with a two-under 70 to hold the top spot on the individual leaderboard with four birdies against two bogeys for the round.
