INDIANAPOLIS (February 16, 2017) - 2016 Defending Horizon League men’s golf champion Cleveland State was tabbed the preseason favorite on the men’s side, while Oakland earned the most votes on the women’s side to defend its crown in the 2017 Horizon League Coaches’ Preseason Golf Poll.
CSU claimed six first place votes to finish with a total of 42 points Oakland finished second in the poll with 30 points. Wright State was next with 26 points, while Valparaiso placed fourth with 21 points. Northern Kentucky in its second season in the League finished fifth for the second straight year, with Detroit Mercy sixth, Youngstown State seventh and Green Bay rounding out the poll.
The Vikings won their third straight Horizon League Golf Championship last spring making it their seventh title in the last 11 years.
After winning their first league title in the program’s history in 2016, Oakland was predicted to repeat on the women’s side with 26 points edging Youngstown State who finished in second place with 25 points. Cleveland State placed third with 23 points, Northern Kentucky finished fourth with a total of 22 points with Detroit Mercy coming in fifth with 17 points. Valparaiso accounted for 14 points with a sixth place finish, followed by UIC and Green Bay rounding out the women’s poll at seventh and eighth respectively.
The 2017 Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Golf Championship will be contested April 23-25 at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
