Cleveland State Places 10th at NCAA Sugar Grove Regional

SUGAR GROVE, Ill.—Cleveland State carded a final round 307 to place 10th at the NCAA Sugar Grove Regional on Saturday afternoon at the par-72, 7,151-yard Rich Harvest Farms.

The 10th place finish at regionals is the best in school history.

Senior Andrew Bailey led the Vikings with a 54-hole total 223 (76-69-78) to place in a tie for 15th. Bailey fired the best round of the day on Friday and his 3-under par 69 was tied for the best round of the tournament.

Junior Michael Balcar finished in a tie for 31st after closing with a 76. The right-handed golfer opened with rounds of 79-74.

After opening with an 81, freshman Pat Luth shot a 77 before closing with a 74. His final round score marked the best round of the day for the Vikings.

Sophomore Mitchell Moore finished at 240 (83-78-79) while senior Brendan Byrne was five shots back at 245 (79-80-86).

The average score for the field was 77.29 strokes per round.

Illinois, runner-up at the 2013 NCAA Golf Championship, edged UAB by two-shots to take first-place. On the individual side, Brian Campbell of Illinois claimed a four-stroke victory (69-70-72-211).

Next season, the Vikings return three of their top five golfers in Balcar, Moore and Luth.

Bailey exits as a three-time Horizon League Player of the Year (2012-14) and was also named Newcomer of the Year in 2011. He holds the lowest career scoring average in school history (73.5), while his 72.3 scoring average this season is also tops in school history.
