LEXINGTON, Ky. - For the second straight year, Cleveland State University has won the Horizon League Men's Golf Championship, coming from three strokes behind during the final round. The Vikings, led by two-time medalist Jake Scott, held off Detroit to win the tournament by five strokes.
This marks the second straight year CSU has won the men's golf and men's tennis championships during the same week.
Cleveland State totaled 887 (302-297-288), getting steady play from Scott through all three rounds. Kent Monas provided the Vikings with a huge lift in the final round, firing a 72 to finish eighth.
Runner-up University of Detroit Mercy ended with an 892 tally (300-296-296) after taking a three stroke lead into Tuesday's final 18 holes. The Titans had more balance than the Vikings, placing three competitors (David Byrne, Britt Pronk and Jeff Clarridge) in the top 10. However, Scott was too consistent and Monas finished too strong for Detroit to come win.
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay finished third with an 893 (299-300-294) total, followed by Loyola University Chicago (908), Wright State University (911), Butler University (914) and Youngstown State University (924).
Scott was also voted as Horizon League Player of the Year by the League's seven golf coaches. Green Bay's Austin Ehlenfeldt was tabbed as newcomer of the year and Cleveland State's Steve Weir was named coach of the year.
The Vikings advance to the NCAA Regional May 14-16 in Texas, California, New Jersey or Florida. The NCAA Men's Golf Selection Show is set for May 4.
