Cleveland State Rolls Past YSU into Volleyball Tournament Semifinals

YOUNGSTOWN-Cleveland State trailed for only three points the entire match and cruised to a 30-21, 30-23, 30-28 victory over host Youngstown State Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2004 Horizon League Volleyball Championship at Beeghly Center.


The No. 4 seed Vikings (14-12) were never down by more than a single point -- all three times early in game three -- in ruining the upset hopes of the hometown Penguins, who had swept No. 5 seed UIC in the first round Thursday. Cleveland State's Jamie Bouyer pounded out a match-high 17 kills with no errors and added six blocks, while setter Kelly Crain had 35 assists, 10 digs and eight kills. The Vikings' nine-point win was their largest lead in game one and they were up by as many as 10 in game two.


"We played real efficiently in a lot of different areas," said Cleveland State head coach Chuck Voss. "We had excellent focus. Now, we get the No. 1 seed (UW-Milwaukee), and you have to beat the best to be the best."


Freshman Jessica Fraley led the Penguins (10-21) with 12 kills and Melanie Pounders had 10 in a losing effort.


With the win, Cleveland State advances to face No. 1 and regular-season champion UW-Milwaukee Saturday in the tournament semifinals at 2 p.m. EST. The top four seeds all advanced as No. 3 seed Loyola will play No. 3 Butler in the other semifinal at 4:30 p.m.
