Cleveland State, UW-Milwaukee honored with AVCA Team Academic Awards

Lexington, Ky. - Already recognized as one of the top teams in the Horizon League on the court, the Cleveland State volleyball squad was honored on Monday (July 31) as one of the best in the nation in the classroom as the Vikings received the Game Plan/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award.
The Vikings put together a 3.42 GPA for the 2005-06 academic year in addition to finishing second in the Horizon League with a school-record 11 league victories.
"This award is a testament to the quality of student-athletes that we put have put an emphasis on bringing to Cleveland State," head coach Chuck Voss said. "Not only are we getting stronger every year on the court, but our team continues to rank among the best in the nation in the classroom as well."
Regular-season League champion UW-Milwaukee also was cited for its work in the classroom, as was future League member Valparaiso. A total of 54 Division I programs received recognition, joining 233 other teams at various levels (including high school, Division I, II, III, NAIA and junior college).
The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors college and high school teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a cumulative 3.30 GPA (or a 4.1 on a 5.0 scale) during the school year. At the Division I level, the Vikings were one of 54 schools to be honored out of 311 that sponsor women's volleyball.
