HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- Cleveland State captured its third Horizon League Golf Championship title in the last four years today at Mission Inn resort. The Vikings finished the 54-hole event with a score of 925 (+61) while Wright State trailed by seven strokes at 932 (+68). Cleveland State earns the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championships.
Individual honors went to Cleveland State's Andrew Bailey and Michael Klaric III as the freshman and sophomore both carded a three-round total of 224 (+9), sending their team to the NCAA Championships. Bailey fired off a one under par 71 in the first round while Klaric never shot more than three over throughout all three rounds.
Immediately following the event, All-Tournament accolades were announced at the annual men's golf awards banquet. This year's recipients included Bailey and Klaric, Wright State’s Jordan Higgins and Scott Thompson, Youngstown State’s Michael Lower, Loyola’s Dylan Gergen, and Detroit’s Mark Hicks.
Also recognized at the banquet were the All-League honorees and postseason individual award winners. All-League plaques were given to Cleveland State’s Bailey, Klaric and senior Kent Monas, Loyola’s Gergen, Detroit’s Jeff Clarridge and Wright State’s Charlie Doll and Scott Thompson.
Monas was also named the 2011 Player of the Year, while freshman teammate Bailey took home Newcomer of the Year accolades. Vikings head coach Steve Weir was named the 2011 Coach of the Year.
