Cleveland State's Doran and UIC's Frazier Tab Weekly Accolades

INDIANAPOLIS –Cleveland State senior Nena Doran (Ypsilanti, Mich.) is the Horizon League softball Player of the Week, while UIC freshman Karissa Frazier (Temecula, Calif.) is the Horizon League softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of Feb. 3-9.

Cleveland State began its season competing in the CSU Dome Tournament. The Vikings swept the tournament, collecting three wins to kick-off the 2015 campaign undefeated. On Friday, the squad came out with a 4-0 win over Toledo and a 8-0 (five innings) victory against Niagara. To conclude the tournament, Cleveland State bested Canisius in an 8-4 win.

Doran led the Vikings at the plate, hitting .667 throughout the three games and garnering a .667 on-base percentage. The senior went 8-for-12 overall while tallying four runs, two home runs and four runs batted in. Doran was 4-for-5 with a double, and two RBI facing Canisius and went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and a RBI versus Toledo. For the tournament, the senior compiled a 1.250 slugging percentage.

UIC started off its season at the Total Control Sports Invitational in Rosemont, Ill. The Flames went 3-2 over the three days of competition, picking up wins over North Dakota (4-1), Miami (OH) (6-0) and Central Michigan (6-5). The team fell to Syracuse on Friday in its first contest of the weekend and fell to Butler to close out Saturday’s games.

Frazier made four appearances for UIC, while starting one and collecting two wins and a save. The freshman tallied her first career start against North Dakota State and pitched a complete game, allowed zero earned runs and fanned seven opposing batters. Against Miami (OH) the freshman was put in for relief to mark her first-career save and did not allow a single hit. To tab her second win of the tournament, Frazier was put in the ballgame against Central Michigan in the third inning where she held them scoreless the final five innings and tallied three strikeouts. For the Invitational, Frazier compiled an ERA of .82 while allowing only 11 hits, three runs and two earned runs in her 17.0 innings of work. In addition, she struck-out 14 batters while holding them to an .175 batting-against average.

Cleveland State is back in action this weekend in the NTC Tournament with five games on the docket. UIC takes a short break from play and will return February 20 at the SCU Bronco Classic in Santa Clara, Calif.

Top Players of the Week:
Sarah Dowd, Youngstown State (So.): As the leadoff batter, hit .333 with a pair of doubles, five runs scored, three stolen bases and six walks while reaching base in all four contests.
Sarah Hartley, Oakland (Jr.): Led the team in batting with a .412 average with seven hits, seven runs scored and four RBI for Oakland.
Taylor Lawson, Valparaiso (So.): Named to the All-Tournament Team at the Mercer Invitational while hitting .500 including a pair of three-hit games.
LaRi Mitchell, UIC (Jr.): Collected a .389 hitting percentage while going 7-of-18 from the plate with two RBI, two walks, six stolen bases and three runs.

Top Pitchers of the Week:
Laura Pond, Oakland (Jr.): In 10 innings pitched, compiled an ERA of 2.10 while fanning eight batters and tallying one win.
Alex Radjen, Cleveland State (Sr.): Pitched two complete games for the Vikings while holding an 1.50 ERA and collecting 18 strikeouts in 14.0 innings in the circle.
