INDIANAPOLIS – Cleveland State junior Yannick Goossens (The Hague, Holland) has earned Horizon League Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors, while UIC junior Mariya Kovaleva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) has received Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades.

Each player went unbeaten in singles play, competing at No. 1 singles for their respective teams.

Goossens swept through his opponents at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles as Cleveland State extended its unbeaten Horizon League streak to 29 matches.  The junior won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, over his opponent from Valparaiso on Saturday and took a 6-4, 6-4 victory on Sunday against his foe from UIC.

Kovaleva was a perfect 6-0 combined at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.  Hosting No. 44 Long Beach State, the junior picked up a straight set 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1 in a 5-2 loss.  In League play, Kovaleva dropped just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Youngstown State before a 6-1, 6-4 triumph in a 6-1 win over Cleveland State.

The Cleveland State men hit the road for Horizon League matches at Wright State on Saturday, April 9, and at Butler on Sunday, April 10.  UIC hosts Bowling Green in a non-conference match on Friday.
