INDIANAPOLIS -- Cleveland State junior Maggie Hannon has been named Horizon League Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, while Youngstown State sophomore Aly Ryan has earned Defensive Player of the Week honors for the period of Sept. 16-22.
Hannon, a junior from Commerce Township, Mich., was named to the James Madison Invitational All-Tournament team after leading the Vikings to a 2-1 record at the event. Hannon opened the tournament with a team-high 13 kills on a .542 attack percentage in the Vikings 3-1 win over Campbell. She had 14 kills against Wake Forest, hitting .500, as CSU fell, 3-0. In the final match of the tournament, Hannon had 16 kills on a .387 attack percentage in the Vikings 3-1 win over host James Madison.
For the tournament, Hannon finished with 43 kills, an average of 3.91 per set, and hit .468. She had only seven attack errors in 77 total attempts.
Ryan, a sophomore from Novi, Mich., helped lead the Penguins to a 2-0 finish at the Red Flash Invitational on Saturday. She started the day with two solo blocks and five block assists in YSU’s 3-1 win over Akron. The win for the Penguins snapped a 28-match losing streak to Akron dating back to 1985 and a 17-match skid against teams from the Mid-American Conference. Later in the day, Ryan had five blocks, one solo, as YSU dispatched host St. Francis, 3-0.
Ryan finished the tournament with three solo blocks and nine block assists in seven sets of action, an average of 1.714 blocks per set.
Youngstown State (6-7) has one final non-conference tune-up on Tuesday against Robert Morris before beginning conference play on Friday by hosting Cleveland State (10-3).
Other Top Performers for the Week:
Monica Anderson, Green Bay (Sr., OH) - Anderson was named to the All-Tournament team at the Butler Classic after recording 34 kills and hitting .405 in the three matches. She had 12 kills and hit .455 in GB’s sweep of UT-Martin.
Amanda Baker, Oakland (So., MH) - Baker earned a spot on the All-Tournament team at the Huskie Invitational after recording 37 kills and 15 blocks for the Golden Grizzlies last week. She had 21 kills and a .476 hitting percentage in Oakland’s 3-1 win over IPFW on Friday. It was the first 20+-kill match of Baker’s career.
Justine Garcia, UIC (Sr., DS) - Garcia recorded double-digit digs in all three matches for the Flames last week. She finished with 44 digs in 10 sets. She compiled 15 digs in UIC’s three-set win over Binghamton.
Missy Hundelt, Youngstown State (Sr., OH) - Hundelt had 28 kills, 24 digs and nine blocks last week for the Penguins as they won two of their three matches.
Nikki Holmes, Cleveland State (So., DS) - Holmes averaged 4.27 digs per set over the weekend. She recorded a team-high 24 digs against James Madison, her fourth 20-dig match of the season.
Taylor Humm, Oakland (Jr., OH) - Humm had 33 digs and 10 blocks at the Huskie Invitational. She averaged 2.75 digs per set and 0.83 blocks per set.
Sara Sternard, UIC (Jr., MH) - Sternard did not commit an attack error on Saturday for the Flames in their two matches. She had 23 kills on Saturday on 47 attempts (.489 attack percentage). She had 13 total blocks last week to pass the 200-career block milestone.
Ellen Vanden Berg, Valparaiso (Sr., MH) - Vanden Berg averaged 1.40 blocks per set to lead the Crusaders at the Blue and White Classic. She also added 27 kills and was named to the All-Tournament team.
