Cleveland State's Second Place Highlights Men's Golf Action

INDIANAPOLIS--Cleveland State finished in second place on Tuesday at the Cleveland State Invitational to highlight a contingent of Horizon League schools. On Sunday, Green Bay finished in sixth place at the John Dallio Memorial, while Valparaiso placed ninth.

Cleveland State Finishes Second; Detroit Third
AURORA, Ohio - Cleveland State shot a final round even-par 288 to finish as the runner-up of theDallio Memorial, while Valparaiso finished in ninth place.
The Vikings were sixth in the 13 team field after an opening round 290, but climbed into third place after an afternoon round of 285 yesterday. Today's final round, allowed the Vikings to move past Detroit and claim second place.

Cincinnati won the event with a 29-under-par score of 835 and was followed by CSU (863) and the trio of Evansville, Loyola and Detroit who tied for third place at 869. Appalachian State was sixth (873) with Oakland (880), Youngstown State (886), Wright State (890), Dayton (895), Robert Morris (912), Butler (921) and IPFW (930) rounding out the field.

Senior Andrew Bailey placed third overall at 8-under-par 208, carding three straight under par rounds (70-70-68). His final round 68 was tied for the second lowest of the day. Bailey was the lone player in the field to record two eagles and led the 80 player field in par-5 scoring at 4.25 (-9).

The Vikings will be back in action on Oct. 7-8 when CSU competes at the Cincinnati Bearcat Invitational.

Detroit - who was in second place after the first 36 holes - shot a 304 on Tuesday to share third with an 869 (282-283-304) total, just six shots out of the runner-up spot.

"Overall, I think it was a good tournament for us," said UDM head coach Mark Engel. "We beat a lot of good teams and we were playing well today, but we just made some mistakes on the back nine and we let some teams catch up."

Senior Brendan Leonard led Detroit on the final 18 with a 1-under 71 to tie for ninth with a 214 (70-73-71). The 214 ties his career low for the third time in his career, while he also finished in the top 10 for the seventh time.

He led the team with 38 par ¬ the second most in the field ¬ and also tallied 10 birdies, good for second on the squad.

Sophomore Aaron Knutson also tied for ninth with a career-best 214 (70-67-77), 20 strokes better than his previous career low. Knutson topped the team with 14 birdies and was second among the players with an 8-under, 4.33 average on the course¹s Par 5¹s.

Detroit will finish its fall schedule next week, Oct. 7-8, when UDM heads to Hebron, Ky., to compete in Cincinnati's Bearcat Invitational.

Evan Bowser shot even-par 72 and Alex Turner posted a 1-over-par 73 to lead the Oakland men's golf team. The Golden Grizzlies carded a final round of 296 to finish at 880, good for seventh place.

"We sure didn't take advantage of Evan (Bowser) and Alex (Turner) shooting under par," said OU coach Russ Cunningham. "If you had told me we would have two players finish inside the top ten for the tournament, I would have expected us to be in contention, but that just shows you how important it is to have four solid scores each round."

The Golden Grizzlies will compete in their final fall tournament next Monday and Tuesday. The Bearcat Invitational will take place on The Traditions Golf Club in Hebron, Ky.

Youngstown State sophomore Brandon Pluchinsky posted his first career top-10 finish placing ninth. Pluchinsky had a three-round total of 214, including a first-round 67.

Youngstown State placed eighth out of 13 teams with an 886 (299-296-291).

Pluchinsky charged to the first-round co-lead with his 67 in Monday's first round. He carded a 73 later in the day and was tied for fifth following the second round. His 74 on Tuesday left him in ninth place for the event. His previous career-best finish was 11th at last year's Horizon League Championships.

The Penguins return to action on Oct. 7-8 at the Bearcat Invitational.

Ryan Wenzler led Wright State as he tied for 21st with a three-round score of 218 while Tyler McHugh tied for 25th with a 220. The team finished in ninth place.

Wright State returns to action next Monday and Tuesday, October 7-8, at the Bearcat Invitational in Hebron, Kentucky.

Harris of Valparaiso, Ozga of Green Bay Finish in Top-Five
Junior Joe Harris earned his second career top-five finish to pace the Valparaiso men's golf team as it closed out the John Dallio Memorial, contested at Ruffled Feathers G.C. in Lemont, Ill., on Sunday.

The Crusaders finished in ninth place in the 11-team field, closing out the tournament with a score of 927 after a final-round 311. Valpo was just six strokes outside of a fifth-place finish. IUPUI claimed the team title with a score of 896.

“While we have had a lot of solid scoring this fall season, we had our struggles on the course this weekend,” said Crusader head coach David Gring. “Our guys put in the effort, but the results simply were not there.”

“We will have a couple of weeks to prepare for the Dayton Invitational, and look forward to some quality practice time,” said Gring.

Valparaiso returns to the links in two weeks at the Dayton Fall Invitational.

Green Bay opened with a 303-305 on day one; but struggled on the final day to finish at 923 and in sixth place.

Senior Dan Ozga finished in fourth place to lead the Phoenix, shooting 68-80-76 (224, +8). Ozga’s 68 was the low round of the tournament.

Green Bay is in action next on Oct. 7-8 at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate. The 14-team field includes No. 4 UCLA, No. 10 Stanford, R.V. Oklahoma; along with in-state foes Wisconsin and Marquette.
