Cleveland State's Woodard and Shields Collect Horizon League Softball Weekly Honors
INDIANAPOLIS –Cleveland State junior Cynthia Woodard (Elyria, Ohio) is the Horizon League softball Player of the Week, while senior Sara Shields (Randolph, Ohio) is the Horizon League softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 3-9.
Cleveland State traveled to Clearwater, Fla. to compete in the USF Under Armour Classic where the team played in five games over three days of competition. The Vikings won their first three contests defeating Villanova 1-0, Quinnipiac 9-0 and Boston University 5-3. They finished out the tournament with a loss to Boston College 13-0 and then fell to St. John’s 4-3.
Woodard led Cleveland State at the plate hitting .385 over the weekend while tallying a .692 slugging percentage. In her 13 at-bats, she had five hits, two walks, scored three runs and drove-in four runners. Of Woodard’s five hits, she hit one double and one home run to mark her fifth on the season. She also had two 2-for-4 performances against Quinnipiac and Boston University.
Shields dominated in the circle going 2-0 with a .78 earned run average at the Classic in her nine complete innings on the mound. In her one start, she pitched a five-inning no hitter to defeat Quinnipiac. The no hitter was the first of her collegiate career for the Vikings. The senior right-hander totaled 11 strikeouts in the two appearances while holding her opponents to a .103 batting against average.
Cleveland State concludes its Florida trip with a contest against Boston University on Tuesday, March 11 starting at 1:15 p.m.
