INDIANAPOLIS -- Cleveland State guard Cori Coleman (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) and Milwaukee forward Avyanna Young (Milwaukee, Wis.) have been named the Horizon League Women’s Basketball co-Players of the Week and Green Bay forward Mehryn Kraker (West Allis, Wis.) has been named Freshman of the Week.
Coleman notched back-to-back 20-point games for the Vikings last week as they won twice to move into a tie for fourth-place in the Horizon League standings. The junior guard started the week with a game-high 24 points in CSU’s 76-66 win at Valparaiso. Coleman was 9-of-11 from the field in the contest, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. She also tied her career-high with seven steals in the game.
Coleman led the Vikings in scoring on Saturday with 22 points as Cleveland State handed Youngstown State (10-10, 6-1) its first conference loss of the season, 84-80. She clinched the game for CSU by knocking down two free throws with less than 10 seconds remaining. Coleman also grabbed nine rebounds in the contest.
After hitting eight three-pointers in the two contests last week, Coleman now stands in eighth-place in CSU’s record book with 131 career three-pointers.
Young scored the most points by a Horizon League player this season with 36 points on 15-of-19 shooting in UWM’s 85-80 win over Valparaiso on Saturday. The scoring outburst tied for the fourth highest single-game outing in Milwaukee history. She added 10 rebounds in the contest for her eighth double-double of the season.
For the week, Young shot 65.6% from the field and averaged 24.0 points per game.
Kraker was named Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. The West Allis, Wis., native led Green Bay in scoring in both of its games last week as the Phoenix scored two road victories. She started the road trip with 16 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, in Green Bay’s 74-58 win at Oakland. She followed up that performance with 30 points, nine rebounds and two steals in GB’s 84-72 win over Detroit. Kraker was 10-of-16 from the field in the game and knocked down seven three-pointers in the game.
She became the first Phoenix player to have 30+-points in a game since Julie Wojta during the 2011-12 season.
For the week, Kraker was 15-of-23 (65.2%) from the field and 11-of-18 (61.1%) from three-point range.
Top Performers for the Week:
Ruvanna Campbell, UIC (So., F) - Campbell scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in UIC’s win at Milwaukee. She tied career-highs with three blocks and four steals in the contest. She had 22 points and 15 rebounds against Wright State for her League-leading 13th double-double of the season.
Kim Demmings, Wright State (Jr., G) - Demmings led the Raiders with 28 points in their road win at UIC on Saturday. She moved into second-place on WSU’s all-time scoring list with 1,665 points.
Liz Horton, Valparaiso (Sr., G) - Horton scored 15 points in both Horizon League games for the Crusaders last week. She shot 75% from the field on Saturday in Valpo’s game at Milwaukee.
Kaili Lukan, Green Bay (So., G) - Lukan posted her fifth and sixth double-digit scoring efforts of the Horizon League season last week, finishing with 15 points against Oakland and 11 points at Detroit.
Tayelor McCalister, Detroit (So., G) - McCalister posted career-highs with 24 points and nine rebounds against Green Bay. Earlier in the week she had 14 points and five assists at Youngstown State.
Heidi Schlegel, Youngstown State (Jr., F) - Schlegel had two double-doubles for the Penguins last week. She had 16 points and 14 rebounds in YSU’s come-from-behind win over Detroit on Wednesday. She posted game-highs of 22 points and 13 rebounds on Saturday at Cleveland State.
Bethany Watterworth, Oakland (Sr., F) - Watterworth scored a season-high 28 points against Green Bay, making a career-high 12 free throws in the contest. She has had four League games with 20+-points.
Top Freshman for the Week:
Nola Anderson, Oakland (Fr., G) - Anderson scored seven points and recorded four steals on Thursday versus Green Bay.
Jenna Hirsch, Youngstown State (Fr., G) - Hirsch averaged 13 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists for the Penguins last week. She had 16 points, six assists and six rebounds in YSU’s win over Detroit on Wednesday.
Haleigh Ristovski, Detroit (Fr., G) - Ristovski tallied a season-high 15 points on five three-pointers in UDM’s game at Youngstown State. She had eight points, seven rebounds and five assists versus Green Bay on Saturday.
Sydney Snower, Milwaukee (Fr., G) - Snower led UWM freshman last week by averaging 5.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game as the Panthers split their two contests.
