INDIANAPOLIS -- Craig Hammel has joined the Horizon League as the assistant director of communications. Hammel begins his duties on Aug. 1.

Hammel comes to the Horizon League after spending two years with the Indianapolis Colts as a public relations intern. Prior to that, Hammel was a sports information student assistant at the University of Tennessee, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in service management.

“Craig came highly recommended to us by the Colts’ public relations department and his skills and potential were reinforced during the interview process,” said Bill Benner, the League’s senior associate commissioner for external affairs. “We are confident Craig will be both a valuable addition to our staff while helping the Horizon League enhance its growing national profile.”

Hammel, a native of Indianapolis, was chosen from a field of more than 100 applicants.

During his time with the Colts, Hammel updated, edited and researched weekly game notes, wrote and updated player bios, edited the 2009 and 2010 media guides, maintained clip files and wrote stories and press releases for the Colts’ website.

At the Horizon League, Hammel will serve as the primary contact for volleyball, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s swimming and diving and baseball.
