Male Athlete of the Week

 

Gabriel Ngwiri

UIC

Fr., Ruiru, Kenya

In his collegiate debut Ngwiri took eighth place at the Illini Challenge with an 8K time of 26:02 to pace the Flames to a second-place team finish.

 

Female Athlete of the Week

 

Laura Macias

UIC

Sr., Chicago, Ill.

Macias continued to pace the Flames with a second-place finish in the women's 5,000-meter race at the Illini Challenge on Friday, turning in a time of 18:13.

 

This is the second time Macias has won the Athlete of the Week award for the 2006 season.

 

Other Men's Top Performers for the Week

 

Nick Kruse

Youngstown State

Sr., Napoleon, Ohio

Kruse finished 23rd to lead the men's squad at Saturday's Mel Brodt Invitational. Kruse completed the 8K course in 26:39.59.

 

Nick Hawley

UW-Milwaukee

Jr., Appleton, Wis.

Hawley was the top Milwaukee finisher at the Illini Challenge, taking 14th place. He crossed the line in 26:33.

 

Juan Zamora

Wright State

Jr., West Milton, Ohio

Zamora led the Raiders for the third time in as many meets this past weekend at the Cedarville Invitational, finishing in 24th place. He completed the 8K course in a time of 27:19, a drop of 38 seconds from last week's meet. Zamora hasn't finished out of the top-25 in any meet this season.

 

Dan Zinser

Detroit

Sr., Roseville, Mich.

Zinser finished 40th out of 237 runners in the National Catholic meet with a time of 26:56. This was his second straight week as the Titans top runner.

 

Other Women's Top Performers for the Week

 

Lisa Lee

Youngstown State

Fr., Norwalk, Ohio

Lee was the top finisher for a women's squad in which every scoring member improved by at least a minute from the season-opening meet. Lee finished with a 24th-place 5K time of 20:11.15.

 

Holly Nearman

UW-Milwaukee

So., Monroe, Wis.

Nearman led the Panthers to a third-place showing at the Illini Challenge. She placed seventh with a time of 19:01 to finish as UW-Milwaukee's top runner for the second-straight week.

 

Marie McVetta

Wright State

Sr., Grafton, Ohio

McVetta led the Raiders for the third consecutive week at the Cedarville Invitational, covering the 5K course in a season-best time of 20:20. The senior has lowered her times each week during the 2006 season, placing in the top-25 of every race, including a 23rd-place finish this weekend.

 

Caitlan Ebner

Cleveland State

Fr., North Royalton, Ohio

Ebner ran a season-best time of 20:10 at the Toledo Invitational on Saturday. Ebner's time was good for 24th overall in the race. She has now led the Vikings three times in as many meets this season.
