The top of the leaderboard remained a tight affair on Saturday at the 2015 Horizon League Golf Championships played at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., as the Cleveland State men's team and Youngstown State women's team will open the third and final rounds on Sunday with narrow leads.
On the men's side, Cleveland State was again one stroke better than Oakland in the second round as the Vikings hold a two-stroke lead over the Golden Grizzlies heading into the final day of competition. Michael Balcar shot a 73 for the second straight day as he leads the Vikings with a two-round total of 146 and sits in second place in the overall standings. Mitchell Moore fired a 76 in the second round and sits in fourth place overall with a two-round score of 148. Joey Krecic and Paul Minko are tied for 12th overall for CSU with a two-day score of 152.
Oakland's Evan Bowser leads the men's individual race. The Oakland senior shot a one-under-par 71 in the second round and sits at even-par for the tournament with a score of 144. Jake Kneen is next for the Golden Grizzlies with a two-day score of 150, while Jacob Johnson has shot a 151 through two rounds.
Wright State is in third place in the men's standings, seven shots behind Oakland in second. Valparaiso has a three-shot lead over Youngstown State for fourth, while Green Bay sits in sixth place and Detroit rounds out the field in seventh.
In the women's race, Youngstown State improved to two shots over its first round score to break a first-round tie with Oakland and open up a four-stroke lead on the field. YSU's Allison Mitzel shot a 74 in the second round to lead the Penguins, while Emily Dixon and Aislynn Merling both shot a 77. Mitzel is in second-place in the individual standings, Dixon is in third and Merling sits in a tie for sixth-place. Emily Rohanna also is in the top-10 for the Penguins as she is in a tie for eighth place. Courtney Shutt rounds out the Penguins lineup in a tie for 11th place.
Oakland is four shots behind the Penguins in second place. Morgan Smith continued to pace the field in the individual race as she shot a 73 in the second round and sits alone in first with a two-day score of 144. Smith has a seven-shot advantage over Mitzel in second-place. Elle Nichols is second in the Oakland lineup with a two-day total of 154 and stands alone in fifth place. Marianna Stepp is in a tie for 13th place and Alyssa Albright and Haylee Zyber are in a tie for 15th place to round out the Golden Grizzlies lineup.
Green Bay moved up one spot from Friday and sits in third place, while Valpariso and UIC also moved up and are in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Cleveland State is in sixth and Detroit heads into the final round in seventh place.
The third and final day of the Horizon League Golf Championship begins at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. Live scoring for the event is provided on golfstat.com.
