INDIANAPOLIS -- Cleveland State senior Yannick Goossens (The Hague, Netherlands) has been named Horizon League Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, while UIC senior Mariya Kovaleva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) has earned Horizon League Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors, for the week of Feb. 6-12.
 
Goossens, returning from an injury, helped lead Cleveland State (1-3) to its first win of the year, 4-3, against visiting Xavier. Sliding into No. 3 singles, Goossens won in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to help cllinch the result. Earlier, the senior had teamed with Ben Shklyar to collect an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles, enabling the Vikings to win the doubles point.
 
After sitting out UIC’s (3-3) 6-1 loss to Iowa on Feb. 10, Kovaleva returned to her customary No. 1 singles slot in the Flames’ 5-2 victory at Iowa State the following day. The three-time Horizon League Player of the Year, Kovaleva breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 win. In doubles, Kovaleva teamed with freshman Haley Craig at No. 2 to pick up an 8-4 win.
 
Cleveland State will travel through western New York this weekend, meeting St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Feb. 18, before a Sunday match with Buffalo. UIC will take on the University of Chicago on Saturday, Feb. 18.
