CSU's Grove, Loyola VanBogaert Honored as U.S. Army Scholar-Athletes of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS -- Cleveland State University junior swimmer Stephen Grove and Loyola University Chicago junior basketball player Elyse VanBogaert have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week ending Nov. 30, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Thursday (Dec. 4).


Grove (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) was the runner-up in four events in Cleveland State's dual meet against Ohio State University Nov. 25. He placed second in the 50 free (21.36) and 50 butterfly (22.95) and also helped the 200 medley relay (1:32.20) and 200 free relay (1:24.08) teams to runner-up finishes.


In the classroom, Grove carries a 3.88 grade-point average as a mechanical engineering major.


VanBogaert (Elburn, Ill./Rosary) averaged 22.7 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.3 blocks as the Ramblers went 2-1 in three games last week. She tallied a career-high 29 points in a win over Robert Morris College Nov. 24 and then posted 21 points and a career-best 13 rebounds in a victory over Western New Mexico University Nov. 29.


A music major, VanBogaert owns a 3.71 grade-point average and has been named to the Horizon League's Academic Honor Roll during her career.


The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
