INDIANAPOLIS -- Horizon League volleyball standouts Nickole Kennedy of Cleveland State University and Sarah Moore of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee were recognized Tuesday, Dec. 6, by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for their outstanding play during the 2005 season.

Kennedy, the 2005 Horizon League Player of the Year, was named to the 2005 AVCA All-Midwest Region team, while Moore earned an honorable mention in the Midwest Region.

Kennedy, a native of Sunbury, Ohio, topped the Horizon League with a .318 hitting percentage while also ranking third with 3.83 kills per game. In League competition, her numbers increased to 4.11 kills per game on a .323 hitting percentage, along with 1.15 blocks per game. Moore, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, finished the season as UW-Milwaukee's leader in blocks (1.24 bpg) and hitting percentage (.285), good enough for a top-five Horizon League rank in both categories. During the course of the season, she recorded at least six blocks in a match 10 times and hit .400 or better on seven occasions.

Kennedy's selection marks the second-straight season in which a Viking has made the regional list, with former middle blocker Jamie Bouyer earning a spot on the 2004 All-Midwest team. The Horizon League boasted four players on the 2004 list as Butler University's Areal Bienemy, Loyola University Chicago's Lauren Holbrook and UW-Milwaukee's Karen Fruit joined Bouyer on last year's squad. In addition, Loyola outside hitter Nichol Amberg earned a 2004 AVCA all-region honorable mention.

The University of Houston paced the 2005 honor roll with three representatives, libero Jaci Gonzalez, outside hitter Kariny Ritter and middle blocker Becca Sartori, with the Marshall University tandem of outside hitter Kelly-Anne Billingy and setter Katie Stein also earning distinction. The rest of the team includes outside hitter Kari Stacy of the University of Texas-El Paso, setter Julie Silva of the University of Tulsa, Eastern Kentucky University middle blocker Liz Guard, Jacksonville State University middle blocker Abbey Breit and Rice University outside hitter Olaya Pazo. Tulane University outside hitter Sara Radosevic was named 2005 AVCA Midwest Region Freshman of the Year.

Joining Moore as All-Midwest Region Honorable Mentions are Rice setter Kristina Hoban and middle blocker Tessa Kuykendall, Texas-El Paso middle blocker Brooke Peugh, Marshall middle blocker Nickie Sanlin and University of Alabama at Birmingham outside hitter Ivana Bozic.

The Midwest Region is comprised of schools from the Horizon League, Conference USA, the Ohio Valley Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The 12 members of the All-Midwest Region team will join members of the seven other all-region teams on the AVCA All-America ballot.
