INDIANAPOLIS -- Cleveland State sophomore Jorg van der Vloet (Waalre, Netherlands) has been named the Horizon League Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, while Vikings freshman Ellen Folkers (Groningen, Netherlands/Belcampo, Rolingcollege Groningen) has earned Women’s Tennis honors, for the week of Feb. 18-24. The accolade is the first of both players’ careers.
The Cleveland State men’s team (3-6) won its lone match of the week, rolling past St. Bonaventure, 6-1, on Saturday, Feb. 23. The following day, the Cleveland State women (3-5) swept past Ball State, 4-3, and Oakland, 6-1.
Playing at No. 1 singles, van der Vloet collected the match-clinching point with a 6-4, 6-2 victory. The sophomore teamed with Matt Kuelker to notch an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles as the Vikings swept all three matches. The singles win pushed van der Vloet’s record to an even 4-4 on the year, all at No. 1 singles.
Folkers went 4-0 on the weekend, posting wins at No. 5 and 6 singles while teaming with Mathilde Orange for two victories at No. 3 doubles. The freshman opened the matches at No. 6 singles, breezing to a 6-1, 6-1 win against Ball State. Folkers and Orange notched an 8-7 (5) victory at No. 3 doubles as well.
Moving up to No. 5 for the evening match versus Oakland, Folkers won again in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-1. Folkers and Orange earlier tallied an 8-2 win at No. 3, making the duo 4-1 in their last five doubles matches.
While the Cleveland State men will be off this week, the Viking women’s team will host IPFW on Friday, March 1, at 7 p.m. EST before heading to Pittsburgh, Pa., to meet Duquesne on Saturday, March 2, at 4 p.m. EST.
