Loyola University Chicago sophomore Malcolm DeBaun (men's soccer) and University of Wisconsin-Green Bay senior Betty Slinger (women's volleyball) have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Sept. 18).

DeBaun was a key member of a Loyola defense that posted a pair of draws last week. He helped the Ramblers to a 2-2 tie with Eastern Illinois, the fifth-ranked team in the region. DeBaun was a stopper on defense against a 1-1 draw with Valparaiso before leaving the game early because of injury.

In the classroom, DeBaun carries a 3.96 grade-point average as a biology major. He also helped his Rambler team to an NSCAA Team Academic Award in 2006.

Slinger was named to the Gopher Invitational's All-Tournament team for her performance in the Phoenix's three matches. She averaged 8.78 assists, 2.11 kills, and 3.00 digs per game, while hitting .311 for the week. Slinger hit .667 with eight kills against No. 13 Minnesota, while earning a double-double with 35 assists and 15 digs in Green Bay's win over Creighton.

Academically, Slinger maintains a 3.818 grade-point average as a human biology major, with minors in chemistry and Spanish. She has been a two-time member of the Horizon League All-Academic Team as well as a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-District V First Team. Slinger's academic efforts also aided Green Bay in receiving the AVCA Academic Team Award.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.

OTHER MALE NOMINEES:

Kevin Sasena, Butler (golf, junior, 3.798, marketing) tied for 20th place at the Bowling Green John Piper Intercollegiate last week. He shot a seven-over-par 223 for the 54-hole tournament, tying with teammate Kyle Thomas for the low Bulldog total. His effort earned him a second-place tie in total pars with 41.

Kyle Cobb, Cleveland State (golf, sophomore, 3.47, accounting) helped the Vikings to a fourth-place finish at the John Piper Intercollegiate tournament. His effort placed him 31st overall with a 54-hole total of 226.

David Znaty, Green Bay (soccer, sophomore, 3.45, pre-business administration) came off of the bench in two matches last week, scoring two goals and adding an assist in a pair of Phoenix victories. Previously hampered by injury, his five points last week were his first of the season, and place him second on the team in scoring this year.
