Horizon League Women’s Basketball Scoreboard (Jan. 10)
Wright State 71, Milwaukee 61
Preseason Horizon League Player of the Year Kim Demmings scored a game-high 35 points to lead Wright State to a 71-61 win at Milwaukee in both team’s League opener on Thursday night.
Demmings was 13-of-20 from the field, including 5-of-10 from three-point range, as she went over 30 points for the second time this season. The sophomore guard also paced the Raiders in rebounds (8), assists (3) and steals (3). Breanna Stucke was the only other Raider to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points.
Sami Tucker led three Panthers in double figures with 17 points. She also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season. Angela Rodriguez finished with 16 and Emily Decorah had 12, all on three-pointers.
Wright State never trailed in the game and the only tie of the game occurred at 3-3. The Raiders jumped out to a 24-14 lead but their lead was only three, 34-31, with a little over a minute remaining before they ended the half on a 7-0 burst to take a 41-31 lead into the break.
Milwaukee scored the first five points of the second half to cut Wright State’s lead in half, but the Raiders responded with a 16-6 run to take a 57-42 and UWM was never able to cut the lead to single digits the rest of the game.
Wright State shot 46.6 percent from the field, compared to just 37.3 percent for Milwaukee. The Raiders actually committed two more turnovers in the game than UWM, but Wright State did a much better job of converting turnovers to points as the Raiders had 22 points off turnovers compared to just five for Milwaukee.
Wright State stays in Wisconsin for its next game as the Raiders will take on preseason favorite Green Bay on Saturday. Milwaukee has the weekend off and will return to action on Jan. 17 at Youngstown State.
