On the strength of an 11-0 run to open the second half, the Detroit women's basketball team made it a successful start to the home season as the Titans defeated Canisius, 65-54, on Tuesday night at Calihan Hall.

Sophomore Shareta Brown had a game-high 24 points to go with eight rebounds and five assists. Freshman Rosanna Reynolds added 15 points and secured seven boards, while sophomore Audrey Matteson tied her career high with 12 points, had a career-best five assists while grabbing five rebounds.

UDM (1-1) led by six at the break, 33-27, but then broke the game open with that 11-0 spurt, holding Canisius (1-1) scoreless for the first six minutes as the Titans jumped out in front to a 44-27 advantage. Brown was the catalyst in that run with eight-straight points to begin the stanza.

Detroit held a double-digit lead the rest of the way, raising its lead to as many as 19, 51-32, with 10:43 left as Matteson hit her second trey of the game.

Shayok ended the contest with five points, 14 rebounds and three steals as the Titans outrebounded the Golden Griffins, 44-28, which included 17 offensive caroms.

The Titans shot 49% from the field hitting 25 of their 51 shots, while holding Canisius to 35% (21-of-60).  UDM also totaled 36 of its 65 points in the paint.

The Titan defense was strong from the very start holding Canisius to just two points, 1-of-8 shooting and four turnovers through the first eight minutes of action as Detroit started the game on a 12-2 run. The UDM offense was slow at first, but back-to-back 3-pointers by junior Megan Hatter and Matteson got UDM going as the Titans jumped out to a 10-4 lead at the 14:44 mark.

A few minutes later, Matteson scored again to put the Titans up 12-2 as she had seven early on.

Both teams started to find their offensive rhythm, but the Titans maintained their lead throughout the half and with Brown's three-point play at 5:42, they regained a 10-point lead, 26-16. The Red, white and blue pushed its advantage to 11, 31-20, with three minutes left in the period, before going into the locker room up 33-27.

The game was part of the nationwide Jesuit Basketball Spotlight project, using Jesuit basketball to raise awareness of Jesuit education. The Jesuit Basketball Spotlight project highlights more than 90 games this season between men's and women's teams from the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities across the United States. Each of the 28 are dedicated to strong academics and teaching women and men to serve others and live a faith that does justice.

Youngstown State 60, Buffalo 50
The Youngstown State women's basketball team used strong defense and got 24 points and 15 rebounds from Brandi Brown to hold off Buffalo in a 60-50 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Arena.

Freshman Shar'Rae Davis added a career-high 19 points, six rebounds and four assists, and Liz Hornberger matched her career high with 12 points. Rachel Gregory had 17 points to lead Buffalo.

The Penguins held Buffalo scoreless for more than five minutes on three different occasions in the contest, and that helped them overcome a slugging ending to the game in which they went without a field goal for nine minutes.

Hornberger hit three triples in the first eight minutes of the second half, and her third gave the Penguins a 45-30 lead with 12:17 left. Two free throws by Brown at the 8:49 mark gave YSU its largest lead at 50-32, but Buffalo went on a 15-3 run to get within 53-47 with 3:10 remaining. YSU scored the next five points on four free Davis free throws and one by Brown to go up 58-47, and Brown answered a Buffalo 3-pointer with a breakaway bucket for the game's final points.

YSU's 10-point victory avenged a 54-point loss at Buffalo three ago. It follows YSU's 66-point turnaround against Pittsburgh when it beat the Panthers by 14 on Friday after losing by 52 three seasons ago.

The Penguins are 2-0 for the first time since 1999-2000.

Brown and Davis scored the first 25 points for Youngstown State in helping the Penguins build a 30-20 lead at halftime. The Penguins kept Buffalo scoreless for spells of 5:50 and 5:37 in the period.

Buffalo opened the game by scoring nine of the first 12 points to take a 9-3 lead at the 17:04 mark, but Brown hit a 3-pointer to end the run and get the Penguins to the first media time out down just 9-6. YSU turned up the defensive pressure, and the Bulls scored eight points over the next 14 minutes.

Brown scored the first 10 points for the Penguins, and her bucket at the 14:28 left gave YSU its first lead at 10-9. Mackenzie Loesing gave Buffalo an 11-10 lead at the 13:55 mark, but that would be the Bulls' final lead.

With UB's concentration on Brown, Davis scored 11 of YSU's next 13 points.

YSU scored the next six points to go up 16-11 on a Davis bucket, and it went on a 12-0 spurt to take its largest lead at 30-17. Hornberger's 3-pointer at the 1:45 mark accounted for YSU's first points by someone other than Brown or Davis, and Monica Touvelle's bucket gave YSU its 30-17 lead with 1:04 left. Christa Baccas converted a three-point play with 34.1 seconds left to allow Buffalo to stop the Penguins' run just before halftime.

Brown had 14 points and eight rebounds in the first half, and Davis had 11 points.

Ohio 63, Cleveland State 56
Despite a late push in the final minutes of the contest, the Cleveland State women's basketball team dropped their first contest of the 2012-13 season Tuesday evening, falling at Ohio, 63-56. The Vikings are now 1-1 on the season, while Ohio is now 1-0.

Shalonda Winton led the Vikings with her second straight double-double, posting 24 points and 15 rebounds, while Cori Coleman added 15 points, three steals and two assists. Imani Gordon notched seven points and four rebounds for the Vikings, with Kiersten Green posting three steals, three assists and four rebounds.

The Vikings got off to a strong start, opening the game with a 9-4 advantage at the 13:50 mark on a Winton jumper. Ohio bounced back with a 15-4 run over the next six minutes, gaining a 10-point lead at the 23-13 mark. Throughout the final eight minutes of the first half CSU climbed its way back into the contest, marking a 17-6 run to close out the first stanza, heading into halftime with a one-point lead (30-29).

Cleveland State opened the second half on a 5-0 run, with three points from Gordon and two from Winton, but the Bobcats responded with a 12-6 run that tied the game at 41-41. Ohio then gained their first lead since the 2:44 mark in the first half (43-42) and went on to outscore CSU 15-6 over the next seven minutes to hold a 10-point lead (58-48), tying their largest of the contest.

The Vikings made a late push over the next 1:21, bringing the score within three points after going on a 7-0 run. CSU got points from Winton (2), Green (2), Coleman (2) and Honesty King (1) during this final run. That would be as close as the Vikings would get though, as Ohio pulled away with the seven-point victory after posting five of the final six points.
