Detroit 73, Wright State 66
Detroit outscored Wright State 10-3 over the final 2:55 to defeat Wright State, 73-66, on Wednesday night inside Calihan Hall.
With the score tied at 63, Senee Shearer connected on a three-pointer to give the Titans a lead they would never relinquish. UDM forced a turnover on the next possession and Yar Shayok made a layup to give the Titans a 68-63 lead. Kim Demmings cut UDM’s lead to two, 68-66, on a three-pointer with 2:01 left, but that was as close as the Raiders could get as the Titans scored on their next two possessions to push the lead out to seven.
It did not look like the Titans would need any late game heroics until Wright State made a run in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Detroit led 38-30 at halftime and extended the lead to double digits early in the second half. The Titans still led 61-50 with 7:50 remaining when Wright State went on a 13-2 run over 4:35, tying the game at 63 on a Tayler Stanton free throw. But the Raiders could not get a stop after that as the Titans scored on their next four possessions to put the game away.
Shareta Brown led the Titans with 21 points, but the sophomore forward – who came into the game 2nd in the country in field goal percentage – was just 7-of-19 from the field and 5-of-10 from the free throw line. Shayok finished with 18 points and tied with Brown for game-high honors with 13 rebounds. Megan Hatter had 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field. Detroit outrebounded Wright State by 11 and also outscored the Raiders bench, 22-2.
Demmings led the Raiders with 21 points, but like fellow sophomore standout Brown, struggled from the field, shooting just 29.6 percent (8-of-27). Stanton finished with 15 points, K.C. Elkins had 12 and Breanna Stucke had 11 as those four players combined to score 59 of Wright State’s 66 points.
Loyola 68, Valparaiso 58
Loyola won its second straight game, and third in the last four, as the Ramblers outlasted Valparaiso, 68-58, on Wednesday at Gentile Arena.
Simone Law, playing in just her second game back, after missing six games because of injury, scored a game-high 19 points to pace the Ramblers. Senior Monica Albano finished with 14 points for Loyola and also passed out five assists and had no turnovers. Freshman Taylor Johnson was the final Rambler in double figures, scoring 13 points and also grabbing nine rebounds and passing out five assists.
The Ramblers took control of the game at the end of the first half, going on a 16-4 run to turn a 21-18 deficit into a 34-25 lead at halftime.
Valparaiso scored the first five points of the second half to cut the lead to four and got as close as one, 46-45, with 9:51 remaining, but Loyola would score the next seven points to go up by eight.
The Crusaders had one final run in them, cutting Loyola’s lead to 56-53 on a layup by Charae Richardson with 4:30 remaining, but Loyola went on a 10-0 run, holding the Crusaders scoreless for over three minutes to put the game away.
Valparaiso outrebounded Loyola by nine, 43-34, but any advantage for the Crusaders was nullified as Valpo committed 17 turnovers to just eight for the Ramblers.
Richardson led the Crusader attack with 16 points, while Shaquira Scott finished with 15. Tabitha Gerardot was the final Valpo player in double figures with 11 points.
