Detroit Closes Out Season at NCAA West Regional

CLE ELUM, Wash.--Lindsey Lammers and Christina Thorne saw their Titan careers come to an end as the Detroit women's golf team wrapped up its second-straight Horizon League Championship season at the NCAA West Regional Championships on Saturday.

The NCAA West Regional was hosted by Washington at the Par 72, 6,252-yard Tumble Creek Course at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Washington.

The two-time Horizon League champions finished the event in 24th place with a 979 (336-316-327) as the red, white and blue totaled a 327 in the final round on a windy and cool Saturday afternoon. The 979 is the second lowest regional score in school history behind the 952 it posted last year at the NCAA Central Regional Championships in Norman, Okla., and ahead of the 1064 Detroit carded in the 2010 Central Regional in Columbus, Ind.

Senior Lammers and junior Olivia Richards had the best scores on the day for Detroit as each tallied a 5-over 77.

Lammers – the two-time Horizon League Player of the Year and two-time league medalist – had nine pars and birded hole 2 and 15 in her final collegiate round. Lammers tied for 75th with a 237 (82-78-77) as the 2014 President's Award winner ended her career with a school record 77.77 average, including tying her own school record with a 76.25 mark on the year. She also leaves with a school record eight career victories.

Thorne had five pars in her final 18 holes as she claimed 116th with a 250 (85-76-89). She had the best round of this year's regional for the Titans with her 4-over 76 yesterday and her 2-over 74 at last year's NCAA event is still a school record. Thorne – a two-time All-Horizon League honoree and two-time Horizon League All-Tournament – ended her career with an 81.51 average, fifth in school history.

Richards shared 101st with a 244 (86-81-77) as she lowered her score for the third-straight day with her 77. She was 1-over on the back nine as she had four pars and birdies on the Par 5 14 and 18 holes, and added five more pars on the front nine. Richards also had the shot of the tournament for Detroit as she holed in her third stroke from 67 yards out on the Par 5 18th hole in round two.

Freshman Sarah Thompson tied for 113th with a 248 (83-81-84) as the Horizon League Freshman of the Year knocked in seven pars in round three, with a string of five in a row at one point. The rookie was steady all year for the Titans and in her first NCAA Regional appearance, she was able to record a pair of birdies in rounds one and two.

Junior Jessica Mallender, who also made her first NCAA Regional start this year, took 126th with a 270 (93-86-91). She had three birdies on the final 18 and had 13 total in the three rounds with her lone birdie in round two.

The 2014 Horizon League title and regional appearance marked the third time in five years that the Titans have reached the postseason in their 10-year history. Detroit closed the 2014 campaign with three victories on the year and now has 12 in the last two seasons.
