Detroit 4, Youngstown State 0

GREEN BAY, Wis.--- Mary Parker tallied three goals and an assist for the first hat-trick and highest point total (7) in the Horizon League this season as the Detroit Titans defeated Youngstown State, 4-0,  in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Women's Soccer Championship.

Detroit (9-4-4) advanced to a semifinal match-up against the winner of the #3 UW-Green Bay and #6 Loyola pairing.  That semifinal match is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. CT.

The Detroit offense got off to a quick start as 2003 Horizon League Tournament MVP Mary Parker hit a one-timer off a miscue by Youngstown State goalkeeper Jessica Yarter only 1:05 in to the first period. The Titans tallied 14 shots in the first half, including six on goal.  The Penguins offense, on the other hand, didn't manage a single shot before the break.

Parker scored again with 27:51 remaining in the match to provide the first of three insurance tallies for the Titans.  Allison Epple and Liz Hardy provided the help on the score.   Sophomore Stacy Armstrong netted the third goal of the match with an 18 yd. shot over Yarter with 17:41 remaining in the second period. Freshman Rachel Stesney and Parker tallied the assists.

Less than five minutes later, Parker tallied her 11th goal of the season, giving her the lead in the Horizon League lead in goals scored.

Detroit recorded 26 shots on the match and converted one-third of its shots on goal.  The Penguins managed only one shot on the night from senior Dianne Fellabaum.

The loss by the Youngstown State was the 16th shutout of the year suffered by the Penguins.  Detroit has shut out seven opponents this season, including two consecutive shutouts against Youngstown State.

The Penguins ended the 2005 season at 1-18-1, having not posted a win in their last six matches.  Youngstown State, which joined the League in 2001, has never won a tournament match.

The 2005 Horizon League Women's Soccer Championship will be held Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 3-6, at Aldo Santaga Stadium on the campus of UW-Green Bay.  The winner of Sunday's championship match will earn the League's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship which will begin Nov. 11 at campus sites.
