INDIANAPOLIS – Detroit earned the lone result among Horizon League men’s soccer teams, as three squads – Valparaiso, UIC and Cleveland State – narrowly fell to ranked opponents in Friday night matches.
Detroit 2, Buffalo 1
After a scoreless 70 minutes, Detroit scored twice in a span of 4:36 to take a 2-1 victory at Buffalo on Friday night.
Detroit (2-3-0) grabbed the first goal of the match as Kevin Pinkos sent a ball into the box, where Adam Bedell headed it past the Buffalo keeper with 16:51 left on the clock. Matt Harkema would add the eventual game-winning goal four minutes later.
Though the Bulls would cut their deficit in half 32 second after Harkema’s tally, the Titans were able to hold on for the victory.
No. 9 UC Santa Barbara 2, Valparaiso 1
Valparaiso struck first against No. 9 UC Santa Barbara, but two second-half goals sent the Gauchos past the Crusaders, 2-1.
Todd Vervynckt put Valparaiso (1-2-1) on the board 28 minutes into the match after the Crusaders earned a corner. Charles Barden took the corner and Elliott Coelho deflected the ball to Vervynckt, who used his right foot to slot the ball into the lower left corner.
The Gauchos would tie the match just eight minutes after the half, with Nic Ryan converting a cross from Achille Campion.
In the 68th minute, the same combination struck again for UCSB, but this time it was Ryan feeding Campion over the top, with Campion beating Kyle Zobeck 1-on-1 for the game winner.
No. 13 Georgetown 3, UIC 2
UIC raced out to a two-goal advantage on No. 13 Georgetown, but the Hoyas scored two second-half goals before netting the overtime winner, handing the Flames a 3-2 setback.
After 15 minutes of play, UIC (1-3-0) led 2-0, as Ivan Stanisavljevic and Joel Salmeron posted goals for the Flames. Stanisavljevic’s tally came at the 9:02 mark of the match, as he raced down the right side before finishing to the lower right corner.
Just 6:41 later, Salmeron finished a pass from Kyle Lindberg, who played a ball in from the right side.
The Flames held the two-goal advantage until Brandon Allen cut the Hoyas’ deficit in half with 22:32 to play; Andy Riemer’s first goal of the year at the 78:26 mark tied the match, and the teams went to overtime from there.
Riemer would strike again 6:50 into the extra session, finding the back of the net from 25 yards out to clinch the win.
No. 22 Brown, Cleveland State 0
Despite 11 shots, Cleveland State could not find the back of the net, falling to No. 22 Brown, 2-0, in the opener of the Brown Classic.
Cleveland State (2-2-0) put just two shots on goal, and despite Brad Stuver’s five saves, could not fend off a Brown attack that had 18 shots and seven on frame.
The Bears grabbed the game-winning goal in the 11th minute, as Dylan Remick capitalized on a scramble in front of the net to beat Stuver. After the teams hit the intermission, Eric Robertson netted the second goal of the match in the 69th minute after a pass from Voltaire Escalona.
