The University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team will make its fourth NCAA post-season appearance in seven years when it travels to Tempe, Ariz., next week to play in the 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Golf West Regional. The announcement was made Monday (May 7) by the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee.

The Titans received an automatic berth into the Regionals by winning the Horizon League Championship last week. It was Detroit's fifth league title in the last nine seasons.

The Central Regional will be hosted by Arizona State at the Karsten Golf Course. Two other Regionals - the East at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga. and the Central at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club in Sugar Grove, Ill. - will also be contested May 17-19.

Detroit will be joined by 26 other teams at the West Regional. The other entrants include top-seeded Stanford, along with UCLA, UNLV, Southern California, East Tennessee State, BYU, Arizona State, Wake Forest, Arizona, UC Irvine, South Carolina, Washington, Vanderbilt, Augusta State, Pepperdine, San Diego State, New Mexico, Oregon State, Colorado State, Oregon, California, Nevada, Denver, Pennsylvania, Bucknell and Monmouth. The top 10 teams from each Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships May 30-June 2 at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va.

The Titans have three starters back from their last NCAA appearance - the 2005 Central Regional - in senior Kyler Murphy (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius) and juniors Mark Sommerfeld (Waterloo, Ontario/Bluevale) and Mikhial Pasic (London, Ontario/H.B. Beal). A pair of freshmen, David Byrne (Essex, Ontario/Essex) and Brian Sparks (Shelby Township, Mich./Lutheran North), will round out the UDM lineup next week.

Sommerfeld repeated in 2007 as Horizon League Player of the Year and Byrne - who won the individual crown at last week's league championship - was named Newcomer of the Year. Both were voted all-conference, and each owned a berth on the All-Tournament Team along with Pasic.

Golfstat will provide live scoring of the three NCAA Golf Regionals next week.
