The University of Detroit Mercy Athletic Department officially unveiled its bright, bold new logo Monday in a gathering of alumni, donors, staff, student-athletes and media at Calihan Hall.

"This was a perfect time to develop a new logo to highlight all the momentum surrounding the Detroit Titans athletic program. So many exciting things are happening, just beginning with the addition of our two new head basketball coaches, Ray McCallum and Autumn Rademacher," athletic director Keri Gaither noted. "We've added three new varsity sports, we're constructing a new tennis complex and lacrosse field and we've had a successful fundraising campaign to renovate the men's basketball offices. And, to top it off, UDM is serving as the host institution for the 2009 NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four."

"Our goal was to create a consistent and unique set of marks for Detroit Titan Athletics that would be instantly recognizable and serve to inspire our current students, athletes, coaches, staff, faculty and alumni," Gaither added. "We wanted a powerful logo which includes an element reflective of the University's support and commitment to Detroit."

The new insignia for Detroit Titan Athletics - designed by a Detroit-based firm, Starr Constand - replaces a logo which has been in use since 1993.

The new logo embraces the University's traditional red, white and blue color scheme while adding gray as an accent color. The logo features the words "Detroit Titans" as well as a sword and shield. Secondary logos also include the sword element as well as the City of Detroit skyline. Additionally, separate word marks have been developed for each of the Titans' varsity athletic teams as well as individual support departments.

"After interviewing multiple design companies, we selected Starr Constand to lead the entire development and logo redesign project. We had been impressed with their work several years ago during the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four bid process and felt their team could fully embrace the task at hand," Gaither said.

"Starr Constand was committed to an inclusive procedure and met multiple times with student-athletes, coaches, staff and alumni. The University's senior leadership was also invited to provided input and feedback. I am delighted with the results and proud to unveil our new Detroit Titans logo."

The logo will be phased in throughout the 2008-09 academic year as it is displayed on the likes of all athletic uniforms, printed communications, souvenirs and the renovated Calihan Hall basketball court. It will also be featured prominently on the new athletic department web site, which will make its debut in the near future.

UDM will utilize the services of The Licensing Resource Group, Inc. in the trademarking of the new logos and word marks. Merchandise and apparel with the new logo are already on sale in the Titan Gift Shop in Calihan Hall.
