INDIANAPOLIS – Detroit senior Evan Bruinsma and Youngstown State junior Heidi Schlegel have been named the Horizon League’s Scholar-Athletes of the Month for December.

Bruinsma carries a 3.8 GPA as a business administration major and was nominated for the 2014 NABC Good Works Team. He was also a member of the Horizon League Honor Roll in the fall and spring of 2012-13 and named to the 2013 UDM Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

Bruinsma tallied his third double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the Titans’ win over Bethune-Cookman. He led Detroit to a five-point victory over Wright State with a game-high 17 points, including a stretch where he went on an 8-0 individual run. Bruinsma has reached 10 or more points in 11 games this season.

Schlegel is a middle childhood education major and carries a 3.74 overall GPA. She completed the 2013 fall semester with a 4.0 GPA was also a member of the Horizon League Honor Roll in the fall and spring of 2012-13.

Over the course of seven games in December, Schlegel led Youngstown State averaging 17.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. She had three 20-plus point performances with 27 points at Akron, 25 points against Malone and 24 points versus Cincinnati. During this stretch, Schlegel scored 123 points, grabbed 49 rebounds, dished out 13 assists and collected five steals.
