INDIANAPOLIS – Detroit sophomore Chris Cheung (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) has earned Horizon League Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors, while Milwaukee sophomore Maddy Soule (New Braufels, Texas) has received Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades.

Neither player dropped a singles match on the week, with Cheung going 3-0 and Soule recording a 4-0 mark.  Detroit was an unblemished 3-0 in matches against IUPUI, IPFW and Chicago State, while the Panthers went 2-2 in contests with North Dakota, Northern Iowa, Wisconsin and Western Illinois.

Playing across the Detroit lineup, Cheung started against IUPUI in the No. 3 singles slot, collecting a come from behind 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 victory.  The sophomore helped the Titans collect a key doubles points as well, teaming with Cesar Escobar Serrano for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.

The next day, Cheung slid down to No. 4 singles, collecting a straight set, 6-3, 6-4, triumph over his opponent from IPFW.  Cheung and Serrano once again teamed for the doubles victory at No. 3, 8-3.

Playing his third match in less than 48 hours, Cheung was bumped up to No. 2 singles, where he cruised to a 6-2, 6-4, win, improving to a combined 6-0 on the week after an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles.

Soule collected one of the biggest wins in Milwaukee tennis history on Sunday, recording a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles against her opponent from Wisconsin.  The result was the first-ever Division I win by a Panthers over a player from Wisconsin in a dual match.

Playing at No. 1 the entire weekend, Soule started the four-match stretch with a 6-1, 6-3 win over her opponent from North Dakota.  The next days, the sophomore rallied for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 triumph against an opponent from Northern Iowa.

Soule capped her week by breezing past Western Illinois’ No. 1 player, 6-4, 6-2, part of a 7-0 win for Milwaukee.  Now 6-1 in singles this season and 14-6 overall, Soule is one win shy of moving into the top 10 for single-season wins in Panther history.

Detroit plays its lone match of the week on Saturday, Feb. 26, traveling to East Lansing, Mich., to meet Michigan State at 10 a.m. ET.  Milwaukee is in action on Friday, Feb. 25, taking on Concordia (Wis.) at 5 p.m. ET and closing the weekend with a Saturday match against IPFW at 7 p.m. ET.
