INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Detroit Mercy golfer Jeff Clarridge and Valparaiso University softball player Karen Korb have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 8, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Friday (March 13).

Clarridge (Barrie, Ontario/Bear Creek), a sophomore, was Detroit's top individual finisher at the season-opening Treasure Coast Classic March 3-4 in Fort Pierce, Fla. He battled unseasonably cold temperatures and high winds to post a 71-72--143 score card, good enough for a share of sixth place individually and trailing only five golfers that play for Florida schools. It was the sixth top-10 finish of Clarridge's college career as he led Detroit to sixth place as a team and was named the Horizon League's Men's Golfer of the Week.

In the classroom, Clarridge carries a 3.775 grade-point average as a business administration major at Detroit. He was named to the UDM Athletic Director's Honor Roll this past winter.

Korb (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran), a senior, sparked the Valparaiso offense from the leadoff spot in eight games a week ago, batting .452 (14-for-31) with two doubles, nine runs scored and two runs-batted-in as the Crusaders went 5-3 at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla. She had five multi-hit games, including three with three hits, and scored two or more runs three times. In addition, Korb was 10-for-10 in stolen-base attempts to extend her school record to 75 for her career. She was selected the Horizon League's Player of the Week for her efforts.

A finance and marketing major, Korb owns a 3.940 grade-point average at Valparaiso. She was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District V First Team last spring after being a second-team pick as a sophomore. Korb has earned Valpo Presidential academic honors and been named to the Dean's List each of her semesters at the school. She also has been recognized on the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll each of the last three semesters.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
