INDIANAPOLIS -- Detroit senior Alex Latosinsky (Sarni, Ontario, Canada/St. Christopher’s) has been named the Horizon League Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, while Detroit freshman Valeryia Kulikouskaya (Minsk, Belarus/Minsk City Olympic) has earned Women’s Tennis honors, for the week of Jan. 28-Feb. 3. The accolade is the second of Latosinsky’s career, while Kulikouskaya earns the award for the first time in her career.
Latosinsky led Detroit (2-6) to its first two wins of the year, a pair of 6-1 victories against Grand Valley State and Wayne State.
Kulikouskaya was unbeaten in singles play for Detroit (1-3), which lost at Eastern Michigan, 5-2, before rolling past Oakland, 7-0.
Latosinsky did not drop a set in singles, winning both of his matches at No. 1. Against Grand Valley State, Latosinsky took his match, 6-3, 6-4. The following day, the senior breezed to a 6-3, 6-0 win against Wayne State.
In doubles play, Latosinsky teamed with Mike Basha in both matches, collecting an 8-4 win on Friday ahead of an 8-3 victory on Saturday.
Kulikouskaya started her week playing at No. 5 singles, earning a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 win against Eastern Michigan. The singles win was the Titans’ lone singles victory in the match. The following day, Kulikouskaya moved up to No. 4 singles, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
The freshman partnered with Chloe Karoub to win both of her matches at No. 2 doubles, defeating Eastern Michigan, 8-4, before an 8-2 victory over Oakland.
The Detroit men will resume competition on Sunday, Feb. 24, when the Titans welcome Dayton at 7 p.m. EST. The Detroit women will also take an extended break until Friday, Feb. 22, when the Titans host Dayton at 7 p.m. EST.
