BOSTON  -- Detroit sophomore guard Ray McCallum was named to the 2012 Lou Henson All-America team, it was announced on Tuesday.

McCallum, named the Robert Calihan Most Valuable Player at Detroit's postseason banquet Monday, topped the Titans in points, assists and steals for the second straight season. The All-Horizon League First Teamer led Detroit to a league title and an NCAA berth for the first time since 1999.

The sophomore was the lone Horizon League student-athlete named to the squad. He became the 37th player in Detroit history to surpassed 1,000 career points with his final bucket in the 65-50 loss to second-seeded Kansas in the NCAA Second Round last Friday.

The second-year phenom adds the honor to his resume, which includes a National Basketball Coaches Association All-District First Team nod, Bob Cousy Award Top 20 and Horizon League Tournament MVP.

Rather than assembling a first second, third team and honorable mentions, the All-American list is one team consisting of twenty-five players.

The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top Mid-Major player in Division I college basketball. The award is named in honor of Lou Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.

The winner of the 2012 Lou Henson Award will be announced on March 30 in New Orleans, site of the NCAA men's basketball championship. Butler's Matt Howard was the recipient of the 2011 award.
