INDIANAPOLIS -- Detroit freshman Shareta Brown is the Horizon League Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, for the period from Feb. 6-Feb. 12 after averaging 23.5 points in Detroit’s road victories over Green Bay and Milwaukee.
On Thursday at ninth-ranked Green Bay, Brown scored 24 points and pulled down seven rebounds as the Titans defeated Green Bay, 70-58. It was the first road victory in Detroit history over a ranked opponent and the first victory over an opponent ranked in the top-10 since Dec. 5, 1981 when the Titans defeated North Carolina State.
On Saturday at Milwaukee, Brown scored 10 seconds into the game to give Detroit the first basket of the game, but the freshman forward picked up two fouls early in the half and spent the final 13:07 of the half on the bench. Milwaukee took advantage of Brown not being in the game, running out to a 12-point first half lead before ultimately taking a 28-24 lead into halftime. In the second half, Brown stayed out of foul trouble, scoring 21 of Detroit’s 38 second half points as the Titans won going away, 62-48. Brown finished the game with 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting and eight rebounds.
For the weekend, Brown shot 15-of-23 (65.2%) from the field and 17-of-22 (77.3%) from the free throw line. She also averaged 7.5 rebounds in the two contests.
Detroit (14-11, 10-3) is currently in second place in the League standings and will look to solidify its hold on second place when it travels to Dayton, Ohio to take on Wright State (16-9, 9-4) on Thursday.
