INDIANAPOLIS -- Detroit sophomore goalkeeper Anthony Shepherd (Rochester, Mich.) has been named Horizon League Men’s Soccer Player of the Week, for the week beginning Aug. 22.  The accolade is the first of Shepherd’s career.

Shepherd led Detroit to its first win at Michigan State in 14 years, recording his first career shutout in a 1-0 overtime victory against the 19th-ranked Spartans. The victory was the first opening-weekend triumph for the Titans since 2006.

The sophomore saw Michigan State take 22 shots and earn 16 corner kicks, but Shepherd turned aside all seven shots on frame. Five of those efforts came in the second half, when Detroit was forced to play a man down due to a red card.

Otieno Victor’s penalty kick in the 96th minute won the match for the Titans, who had not played Michigan State since the 1999 season.

Detroit will return to action with a game against Saint Joseph’s (Pa.) on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. ET. The UDM home opener will be played on Sunday, Sept. 4 against Buffalo at 1 p.m.

Top Performers for the Week:

  • Brian Bement, Loyola (Fr., F) - In his first career match, Bement scored the equalizer in Loyola’s eventual 2-1 defeat to Drake. The freshman was part of an offensive attack that put 13 shots toward the net, as Bement had two shots on goal.
  • Joe Radice, UIC (Jr., F) - Radice potted the game-winning goal in UIC’s season-opening 2-1 triumph over visiting Marquette. In the 59th minute, Radice played a ball from Jesus Torres, and beat goalkeeper David Check to extend UIC’s lead to 2-0.
  • Stipo Zeba, Valparaiso (Jr., F) - Zeba led a balanced attack in an 8-0 rout of Calumet on Friday, posting the first points of his career. The only Crusader to be involved in more than one goal, the junior collected his first career point on an assist in the 84th minute. Zeba’s first career goal followed six minutes later, giving him three points on the night.
  • Craig Feehan, Wright State (Fr., GK) - Making his collegiate debut, Feehan shut out visiting Marshall, turning aside three shots on goal as the Raiders won their season-opener.
