INDIANAPOLIS --- University of Detroit Mercy sophomore infielder Ellen Sinclair has been named the Horizon League Softball Player of the Week, while Wright State University junior righthander Allison Cox has earned Pitcher-of-the-Week accolades for the week ending April 5, the League office announced Tuesday (April 7).

Sinclair batted .667 (8-for-12) to help Detroit end a six-game losing streak with a three-game sweep at Youngstown State University. In the series opener on Wednesday, she went 3-for-4 (single, triple, home run) with four runs-batted-in and two runs scored as the Titans won 7-1, Sinclair then was 5-for-8 with two RBI and three runs in a doubleheader sweep (11-2, 5-1) on Thursday.

Cox went 3-0 and allowed only five earned runs in 24.2 innings as Wright State went 4-2 in six League games last week. She won both games of a doubleheader sweep of Valparaiso University on Thursday, tossing a shutout in the first game (9-0) and then not allowing a run until two outs in the seventh inning in the nightcap (6-2). For the week, Cox struck out nine and allowed just three walks.



Comprised of 10 public and private institutions of higher learning, the Horizon League is an NCAA Division I athletics conference that sponsors 19 intercollegiate championships and is headquartered in Indianapolis. The League and its member institutions aspire to teach young people, through athletic competition, the value of learning, service to others and personal responsibility.



Horizon League teams have enjoyed national success in a variety of sports in recent years, most notably in men's basketball, in which its teams have advanced to the Regional semi-finals of the NCAA Championship three times in the past seven seasons.
